A Second Babel.
It is proposed to erect in Chicago a
$1,000,000 steel tower. At the base
its dimensions will be on a colossal
scale. The first story will be used for
stores, and in a huge court there will
be an exquisite flower garden. A cir
cular drive thirty leet in width, with so
many curvings that before a carriage
reaches top, a distance of nearly three
miles will have been traversed, is to be
enclosed with the frame work. Foot
passengers will be carried to the top
in an electric car or elevator, as they
choose. Another feature will be the
restaurants, three of which will be at
top, conducted respectively on the
German, French and American plans.

will not be necessary to go elsewhere,
It would be impossible to enumerate
the different articles, for anything can

Getting it Down Fine-
There is a prominent republican
out in Illinois, who has seen the hand
writing on the wall, and goes to the
pith in discussing tbeover throw of the
republican party. In the late elections
hesays it was the just retribution of
“gross mismanagement, chicanery,
moral cowardice and underestimation
of the intelligence of the people.” The
name of this frank and level-headed
citizcu is Gen. John McNulta. While
he was talking Gen. McNulta contin
ued iu this rather severe strain: “The
littleness of 1’resident Harrison and
his administration may have had
some influence in this state, though I
do not see or hear of anybody who
gave the slightest attention to him or
his administration.”

Chicago, Ii.l., Nov. 18.—The Na
tional World’s Fair commissioners met
here this afternoon. A resolution that
all plans for public buildings be refer
red to the committee on grounds was
passed Then Mr. H. De Young of
California offered this resolution :
•‘Whereas, the proposition for a
double site is repugnant to the exper
ienced judgement and business sense
of the entire world ; and,
Whereas, this commission has - been
imposed upon by misrepresentations
on the part of the Chicago directory,
said representations being that they
only desired to place a fine art build
ing and the gateway to the main expo
sition on the lake front, and naving
shown their intentions at a recent
meeting by the passage of a resolution
fixing nine different features and eight
buildings on said lake front, they have
also attempted to let contracts of said
buildings before this commission
should assemble again. While they
have temporarily rescinded that ac
tion at the request of their president,
now, the national commission, leeling
that they have been and may be im
posed on again, Jo hereby:
“Resolve, that the action of this
commission in accepting the various
sites offered them was contrary to the
spirit ol the law directing them to ac
cept the sites: that such action is
hereby rescinded, and that the board
of d rectors of the World’s Columbian
Exposition be requested to immediate
ly furnish this commission with a site
where the exposition can be held as
one exhibit."
The resolution was ordered printed,
and will be considered later. The
committee will continue, to-morrow,
tho investigation as to the status ot
World’s Fair matters.
