Jown yeitirday.
Mr, Wilson I’ope, ol Tallahassee,
was in town )tsleiday.
Mr. W. IV, AusVy, of iho A. M.
Road, was in town yesterday.
It was much cooler yesterday.
.Overcoats and fires were in demand.

Arbor Day.
Next Frid.y is ArLor Day. It
should be observed by all the schools
tnroughout the state. We hope it will
be observed by the schools of Thom-
asvtlle and Thomas county. Mr. Prim
gle ol Washington did much last sum
mer, in address at the J’eabody Insti-
tute, to arouse the matter. He was
requested to make some suggestions
about the, thy, snd lie has done so.
For the benefit o! teachers and pupils
we append a programme roada out by
the gentleman:
PROGItAM no. i.
ist. A short speech to the children
on “Arbor Day,” not forgetting to lion-
•or the name-of ex-Governor Sterling J.
Morton. of Nebraska, the originator of
-‘Arbor Day •”
2nd. I.et the speech be followed
by reading and recitation, such as
•‘Forest Hymn,’’ by Bryant, or the
“Brave Old Oak,” or “Woodman
Spare That Tree,” or by reading Home
quotation on trees.
3rd. Now let the tree planting take
place, remember.ng that the holes
.should be dug and the trees all secur
«d the day belore if practicable. Then
in planting the trees let them be dedi
cated, «ay one to ex-Gov. Morton, and
it would be well to have among other
•trees one or two elms and.drdicate one
•of them to Washington, to commemo
rate the fact that in the early settle*
ment of our country it was the custom
of ancestors to plant liberty trees, one
of these is in elm now standing >g
Cambridge, Mass.
Under its shade Washington took
commend ol the continental army
June 3, I77S-
4th. Then the most appropriate
thing you can do in dedicating this
elm is to tead the beautiful poem, by
Holmes on that memorable tree called
“Under the Washington Elm."
1‘KOURAM no.2.
ist. A shoit laU to the children on
the beauty and value of forestry, and
let this be followed by a dialogue com
posed for the purpose by the teacher,
it may be best done by having a
convention of trees and let each boy
tr girl represent any tree they may se
lect, ana discuss the nier.ts and uses
ot the different trees, say by calling
White Oak to the chair and request
ing 1’ine to act as secretary.
2nd. I.et the chairman state that
the object ol the convention is to ad,
vance the interests of forestry in the
county or stale and observe “ Arbor
Day.”
3rd. Then take un one tree, say
owe of the oak family, and discus? that,
state how many kinds are known in
that sect.on and their uses, then let
that discussion be followed by some
quotations from the oak, as:
-Heboid you oik
Jlow rtcrii to. fr.iiTi.n."
“Woodman forbear thy stroke;
Cut not its earth-boun 1 ties;
Oil, spare that aged oak,
Now towering to the skies."
4th. J'hen let this be followed by
quotations, or poems, or both, for in
stance one by James Russell Lowell,
showing most beautifully that the oak
is and ought to be king of forests,
commencing wt h these beautiful lines:
“Want gnarled stretch what depth of
shade is his,
There needs no crown to mark the forest’s
king.”
5th. Then lake up the elm family
and in like manner discuss it. Dodge
is the author ol a good poem on the
elm.
6th So you might take up the pine
fami y and name the number md vari
ety of pines and their uses.
You can here use a beautilu' poem
by Cutter, on the “Murmuring Pme.’
Then let all l e lollowid by t»\e plant
ing, which may be made more inter*
esting by dedicating ha f dozen or
more irees, and iet as many partici
pate in ll.c anniversary tree-pluming
was m as possible.
Arbor Day has been 111 de, by proc;
•nutation of the governor, t ie first Fri
day in December, and a bill has been
introduce^ ip the legislaiure, now in
session, to make the /jra Friday i
December “arbor day” by law, which
we hope will soon pass, but let the
morning or afternoon of the first Fri
day in December be observed this
year whether the apt is passed or
not.
Please regard the above only as
suggestions. Hoping tins may aid
you, and that arbor day will be o -serv
ed all over the state, I am yours truly,
- C. R. Pringue.
As Christmas approaches one natur
ally begins to think of the innumera
ble articles to be purchased, and the
first thing that seems to puzzle them
is, where to get them? Why, at Jer-
ger’s, of course, for two reasons: one is
—you can find anything there for any
kind ol gift, appropriate for holiday,
anniversary, complimentary or souve-
nir presents; the other is, he lias ca
tered to suit all purses, ami as his
stock is so large and varied, you will
find anything there, consequently it
will not be necessary to go elsewhere.
It would be impossible to enumerate
the different articles, for anything can
he had. Facts arc indisputable and
demonstrate themselves. Ilis goods will
he ready for Inspection on Pecembcr
:lrd, and strangers ns well as residents
are invited, Established 1857.
