Fire at Metcalfe,
At 3 o’clock Wednesday morning,
at Metcalfe, the gm and grist null te
longing to Mr. C. T. Hancock was to
tally consumed. The loss amounts to
$2,000 on which there was no insur
ance. The fire is suprosed to have
originated front matches in a lot of
cotton belonging to an old negro wo
man. Two bales of cotton were con
sumed in the fire. This is the largest
fire Metcalfe has yet experienced, and
Mr. Hancock has the sympathy of the
community over his loss.

We have been requeued to state that
Mrs. M. L. Wells will deliver a tern,
perance lecture in the Methodist
church, at 7.30 p. m on Friday, the
i2lh inst. Mrs. Wejls is an earnest
and able worker in the cau-c of tem
perance, and she will no doubt be
greeted by a good audience on the oc
casion. She wili also hold 3 ‘‘Moth
ers Meeting” at the Baptist church,
next day, Saturday, the 13th, at 3:30
o'clock.
Crowds are visiting Jerger's. Their
display is well worth seeing.
Little Ben Harrison.
To night the first group of guests,
of the season of 90 91 will gather injthe
capacious rotunda of the Pincy
Woods.
“Satan” will he in Thomasville on
the evening of the 17th. He has been
here before, and many think he is here
now.
Another one of those delightful gcr-
mans will be danced at the Stuart to
night. Some ten or twelve couples
will participate.
Mrs. H. M Macy and daughters,
Misses Mary and Agnes, arrived yes
terday from New York, and will occu
py their handsome residence on Rem.
ington avenue for the season. Their
numerous friends are glad to sec them.
Rev. R. ;L. Fulton and wife are
spending the winter at Mr. Bowker’s
near the city. Mr. Fulton drove
through from Atlanta, taking in the
beautiful scenery and rurul scenes en-
route. By the way, if one has the lime,
this old fashion mode cf traveling is,
after a'l, the most pleasant.
.Speaking of Mrs. Wells, who will
lecture here on the 12th, the Index,
published at Fairmount, West Va.,
says:
"The lecture of Mrs. Wells, 011 last
Friday evening, drew an audience of
our best people. Any one having a
prejudice against lady lecturers on
their handling of the temperance
question would have that prejudice
removed by hearing Mrs Wells. She
gave a calm, dispassionate discussion
from the standpoint of home and the
effect of intemperance upon the moth
ers and children. It was a plea for
women and children and their right
to struggle in self defense agaiust the
rum traffic. She made a clear, forci
ble and eloquent presentation of the
case. Earnest without being excited,
she charmed her audience from the
start, and often deeply moved them by
her pathetic allusions to the curse of
home and childhood. She has a vo.ee
of marvelous sweetness and power.”
The Macon Telegraph thus sizes up
Ben Harrison:
“If any argument were needed to
prove that Benjamin Harrison, grand
son of William Ilenry Harrison and
grandfather of Baby McKee, is un
worthy of the high office lie holds it is
furnished in his recent message to con
gress. A greater mass of stupidity in
solence and mush was never before
condensed into an official document.
It is sad to think that we cannot get
rid ot this cheap little man until March
4, 1893. The Presidency has never
been conferred on so contemptible a
figure. In comparison with him his
grandfather seems great and even
poor old man Hayes looms to the stat
ure of positive statesmanship.”
Harrison will sifik into merited ob
scurity aftet 1892. He will be repu
diated by his own party. A man must
be very little and mean, to he repudi
ated by the republican party. !
Other Indians Crazy Now.
Yankton, S. D., Dec. 2.—The
Sante Indians are infected with the
Mesisah lunacy. At a council of In
dians held on Saturday a number of
the more turbulent were conspicuously
absent, ar.d the more conservative
men who were present went so far as
to ask Mayor Hebrins to ask the gov
ernment to issue arms to them for pro
tection against the up-river Indians.
This is believed to be a ruse to allay
any fears ol the agent and at t ic same
time secure arms.
