An umbrella mender plied his
trade on the streets yesterday. A
cold wave always brings these itiner
ants south to escaj s the snow and
ice of the Noitli,
Mrs. M. L. Wells, the great lady
orator of the south, will be in Thom-
asville the 12th, 13th and 14th of this
month, and deliver lectures on tem
perance in the Methodist church at
7:30 p. m, Friday, the 12th; at the
Baptist church, to the ladies only, at
3:30 p. m., Saturday, 14th, and at the
Methodist church at 4 p. m., on Sun
day. Mrs. Wells comes highly en
dorsed by many ministers, and the
leading Journals of many large cities
give her very flattering notices.
Former Proprietress of a Board
ing House Here Shot.
Mrs. W. L. Wallace, proprietress of
the Commercial Hotel at, Albany, who
was shot by her husband a few days
ago, formerly had charge of a board
ing house in this city, and she will be
remembered by quite a number. She
was the wife ot Mr. Leben, but for
some reason they seperated; and Mrs.
Leben procured a divorce. One day
last July she ar.d Will Wallace went
to a;, town near Albany and married.
On their return their marriage was an
nounced by means of a certificate
which appeared in the News and Ad
vertiser. The marriage was a surprise
as the bride was then 40 years of age,
and the groom only 21. The shooting
occurred Friday. Wallace fired sev
eral shots, but only one took efiect.
He escaped, but returned and gave
himself up. He said that he intenaed
to kill his wife, and then himself, but
his nerve failed him.
Dr. T. S. Hopkins.
The above gentleman has been ap
pointed a delegate to the Southern
Immigration Convention at Asheville.
Dr. Hopkins has an extensive ac
quaintance, Fast West and North,
and few men are more thoroughly
posted on the climatology of Southern
Georgia. He has given this and
other studies couuccted with the ques
tions of health long years of patient
study, and he will be able to impart
this information to the hundreds who
will meet at Asheville. No section
can hope to secure any large increase
from immigration unless it is a
healthy country. This being true
South Georgia ought, and docs, offer
superior attractions to parties seeking
homes in this bright sunny land of
the South.
Stewards Meeting.
The Stewards of the Methodist
church will meet at the Pastor’s study
to night at 7 o'c'ock. A full attend
ance is desired.
Little Love Lost.
This is how a parson took leave of
his parishioners iu a town in the far
west:
“Dearly beloved, our parting does
not seem hard to me for three reasons
—you do not love me, you do not
love each other and the Lord does
not love you. If you loved me you
would have paid mo for my services
during the past two years. You do
not love each other, otherwise I should
have more marriages to celebrate,
and the Lord does not love you, for
otherwise he would call more of you
to him, and I should have more fttner
al services to conduct.”
His parishioners did not press their
pastor to stay.—Vanity Fair.

As Christmas approaches one Datur-
ally begins to think of the innumera
ble articles to be purchased, and the
first thing that seems to puzzle them
is, where to get them? Why, at Jer-
ger’s, of course, for two reasons: one is
—you can find anything there for any
kind of gift, appropriate for holiday,
anniversary, complimentary or souve
nir presents; the other is, ho has ca
tered to suit all purses, and as his
stock is so large and varied, you will
find anything there, consequently it
will not be necessary to go elsewhere.
It would be impossible to enumerate
the different articles, for anything can
be had. Facts are indisputable and
demonstrate themselves. His goods will
be ready for inspection on December
3rd, and strangers as well as residents
are invited. Established 1857.
