to make an exhibit.
Senator Blair has declared that it
re elected he wil repeat his speech on
the educational bill.
For heaven’s sake keep Blair out of

ern Express Company announced
they would waive this and pay their
proi>ortion of the rewards.

Petition of Cato Adams to transfer res
taurant license to Allen Mitchell.
The following petition was read, hut in
view of improvement to he made at that
point by tile railroad, it was not granted.

The undersigned respectfully petition
your Honorable body, in order to make
the crossing of the S. F. & W. Ry. at its in
tersection of Ilnnscll street, safe for the
large numbers by whom it is used, being
one oi the principal thoroughfare of the
city, t int you cause to be placed at said
crossing or near at some convenient place
an arc electric light.

To the Mayor and Council of the City of
Thomupcitlc:
The petition of Willis J. Parnell respect
fully showeth that he is and for a long time
has been a citizen of Sjiid city, owning and
paying tax on property belonging to him
therein, th't your petitioner owns the ' ousc
culled the Virginia House an i lot, King on
the West side of Jackson street, and other
property adjoining thereto, through anil
by which property the city caused a large
open ditch to he excavated, and into which
directly opposite, mid near the Northwest
corner of the said Virginia Ilonsc has
emptied divers sewers ucross said Jackson
Street, which said ditch, and sewers convey
the filth of n large portion of the city, mak
ing the said open ditch, n nuisance to said
Virginia House, so as to make the property
nlinost worthless, which otherwise would
he valuable. Your petitioner says ns it is now
situated he is unable to use or rent or sell
it for half its value, and that lie is damaged
thereby annually twelve hundred dollars, or
other large sums. Your petitioner prays
relief in the premises, aud asks the Hon.
Mayor and Council to convert said open
ditch into a covered sewer, so as to convey
the filth mentioned away from said property
and thereby abate and remove 6aid nuisance
from his said property and he will ever
pray, 4c.

1 respectfully request that my tax assess
ment be mado less on tho collector’s hooks.
My predecessor, Dr. McRae, gave in the
stock ot $3,400 and it only invoiced $3,200
when I bought it, but it only brought $1,075
at a torccd sale, that amount being what I
paid for it.

The report of finance committee on the
petitions of J. t. Linton, D. J. Sheffield and
T. J. Bottoms was adopted.
The matter of repairing abridge iu the new
street leading Irom Virginia House to Oil
Mill was relcrred to the Mayor and Alderman
M-rrill, ol the street committee, with power
to act.
On motion the street committee was au
thorized to hare 3 incandescent lights put
on Madison street, and 1 on Crawford street-
Alderman Wise was authorized to have
the store in the engine house repaired, und
to remove the hell in the city hall park.
E. O. Thompson, Superintendent Water
Works,to purchase 12 flues for boiler.
Mr. Stone was grunted permission to lay
a sewer from his residence to connect with
the city sewer at his own expense, pro
vided the work is done under tiic supervi
sor of the committee on sewer nod water
works.
On motion Mayor Hopkins was authorizid
11 settle claim of Dr. Ilorroiks.

she persistently refused to board it.

“Oil, Ciiawley, I don’t want to go
up on this side,” she guslied in reply.
‘‘Byt Maud, we’ll get to Troy just the
same.”
‘‘Yes Chawlcy, but we won’t go
through the tunnel. I want to go
through Ihe tunnel ”
‘‘What do you want to go through
the tunnel for Maud?” inquired the
dense young man.
‘ Oh! Chawley,” was all she said.
Then Charlie appeared to catch on,
for he blushed. They waited until the
belt line train went the other way.—
