Colonel Way, ot Stvanualt. a World’s Fair Commissioner Item Geor gia, says: ‘ The colored pc u ie of Georgia and other States have made great progress, and are entitled to an exhibit by themselves if they want .t. Colored people pay taxes on more than $15,000,000 worth of property in Georgia. They claim, and not with out reason, that if their products are shown along with those ot white exhib itors the public will not know that the work is exhibited by colored people. I am in favor of stimulating them to more active competition with whites in manufacturing industries. Editor Underwood of the Camilla Clarion, a good Al'iauceman, gives the following sensible advice to his brethren of that order: Now that the allianeemen have seen the evil of running the Farmers Alliance into political schemes and have seen the ridiculous and disgrace ful politicalcourse of some of the lead ers, they protest against any more of this sort of business. Let. hack to our first great principles and work to build up our farmers, our neighborhoods and our schools. Jn politics wc arc all democrats, and all true democrats favor all measures cal culated to help the farmers. In fact the democratic party in the south is mainly made up of farmers. \\ c can’t run polities through sectet so cieties. We can help each if the al liance is kept on its grand old founda tion. Georgia Pine. The Times-Exterprise has, for years, been sounding notes of alarm about the waste of pine trees. We have tried to show that in the near fu ture the pine forests of Southern Geor gia would be a mine of wealth. A.nd yet the destruction goes on. For a mere pittance tuners arc selling tur pentine privileges. And the tesult is, that our magnificent forests are disap pearing with startling rapidity. Speak ing of this the News says: Georgia at present has the most val uable forest of yellow pine of any state in the union. Her long-leaf pine belt almost covers one-half the counties cf the state. Experts have calculated that, with judicious management, these valuable timber lands would yield $30,- oco.ooo a year for a long time to come. But nowhere, it seems, is the timber simply more recklessly and ex travagantly wasted. “Turpentine farm, ers" are rapidly getting away with these magnificent timber resources. In this A Letter From the West. jLT.Esnur.o, Col.. Dec, 12, 1890. Editor TiMEs-ExTEFUitisF.: I have been a wanderer from the good obi town of Thoinnsvillo for many years. Unlike many western cities it h..s had no sterotyped boom, its growth being of that healthy persistent order peculiar to Colorado, All sorts of schemes are held out here as elsewhere, to induce people to come, 011c of which struck me as novel. The company calls itsell the “National Co-operative Building and Land Association.’’ Their offices had the air of substantial prosperity and the large amount of correspondence on their desks indicated their mail business to he immense. I was told they were the owners of Washington Park, a few moment's walk from the depot, where they have contracted for the erection of a large number of cottages, and that they are now giving warrantee deeds of every fourth residence lot to all come paying twenty five cents^rclyiug for their profit upon the enhanced value of intervening lots. As this kind ol a real estate (leal was in harmony with my depleted exchequer no time was lost iu the transfer of a deed to my inside pocket. My title is clear and I see no reason why my profit should not also he clear in view of the large amount of projected build ing. l’icase favor me with a few extra copies ot your paper to distribute atiiuug numerous old time residents of Thomas county, residing heie and elsewhere iu Color, do, whom I have met in my travel. There was a negro festival Christ mas ere flight near Mr. J. A. filler- rod’s place, and among a great many others that were present, were Will and Ed Mitchell, sons of E.-aw Mitch ell, a worthy and industrious colored man, living at Patten. On their way home before day, Will had to try his pistol to see how ’twoukl shoot. Ed had stepped to one side unknown to Will, of course, lie hit him, striking him in the head killing him almost instantly. The coroner Las been no way it is claimed fully 40 per cent, cf | tided, and an inquest will he held to- the pine has been killed. The stills in operation are sufficient to destroy the remainder in seven yeats more. The price paid for this privilege is not more than $1 per acre, and for this beggar- ly sum the timber resources of the state, which, if (properly husbanded, could be jnadc to yield a steady in come ol millions for years to come, have been ruthlessly sacrificed. The state should take it upon liersell to provide some legislation that would re strict this wanton waste of the timber resources. Bay, Bight here wa want to remark that the festival is a disgrace to civili zation. The legislature ought to pass a law forever prohibiting them. Yes terday lad Mitchell was the very picture ol health and happiness. To day lie is cold in death. Will the youths of the laud never lake warn ing. Subscriber.
