The Negro Problem.
Mit. Editor: The much talked of
and written of problem eeema to
your correspondent, almott, no prob
lem at all. As one tbat has been
in touch with the race all hie life, it
seems quite a waste of time and
thought to try to interfere with the
race question. As to the terrible
that is to happen if let alone, that
is chimera. Some littte friction al
ways has, acd always will occur io
consequence ot the attrition of the
races. Insubordinate ones of each
race are the factors. In the very
nature of.the case nothing can make
all members of either nee as equitable
and .'aw abiding as they ought to be.
In these infractions of the peace
the courts wilt come in and equalise
matters pretty fairly; at least far
better for the black race than banish
ment to the inhospitable shores of
Africa. If the friends of the colored
race wish to inaugurate the best and
most expeditious method of extermi
nation let them send thep to Africa.
And, then too, to remaud the sur
vivors tu heatheuism, separate them
from their best friends, the southern
white people.
It is an undenied fact, that sevtn
teuths of the crimes, and subsequent
prosecutions of the colored people,
•s by the colored people. Now separate
tbo races as .thoroughly as African
colonization will do, and it takes no
prophet to foretell the result. That
this region—the aqoth—is the best
place On the globe for the colored
race, is indubitably demonstrated by
the fact that other things being equal
they have secu mula ed property more
rapidly than any class of people in
the history of the world has ever
done.. And Then,tMO» they have made
mora rapid strides iu obtaining
education than has bee a dooe by any
aimilir elasa of people, with like op*
portuuities. And them opportunities
have been made with very few excep
tions by the southern white people.
The colored people understand our
twjl; its products, and the best method
of obtaining them better than they
could iu a generation iu another
region, The history of almost every
shipment of colonists to’Africa ought
to satisfy any friend of the race that
colonization means demoralization,
degeneration and final extermination
to a greater or leas extent. They
have tried the higher latitudes' of onr
own continent as slaves first and were
sold to u& . Since their emancipation,
many have tried it again, and if they
lived long enough to make enough to
come back to Dixie, they have come
to live with their best friends—in the
cotton fields and cane patches.
Let it be remembered that if; the
colored people and the tontbera peo
pie are let alone by iotermeddlers,
there will be no trouble among them.
Nothing would so embarrass, depress
and impoverish the colored people as
the colonization schemes. No race
understands the southern black peo*

pie so well as the southern white-peo
ple. No race, or even faction, of a
face is ns good a friend to the. black
people as the southern white people.
The quasi philanthropist that seem
so much concerned about the brother
black invariably treat him worse
than his qu.indam owners do when
brought iu business relations with
him. A little incident js here recited
that occurred iu Thomasville a few
years ago by way of illustration,
A party from a higher latitude
asked a farmer wbat he paid farm
hands when employed tor wages. He
replied, eight dollars a month and
rations. The interrogator cried out
shame, shame on you for paying such
a price for laboc. Before the inter
view closed a black woman came
along with a bucket of blackberries,
asked the price, “five cents a quart
sir,” “brought dem six miles outen de
country.” But, instead of paying the
pri ie asked, he jewed the weary wo
man down to 2J cts. a quart and
bought them. Who should have
blashed for shame t

From St. Simons.
A friend sends up the following
news items from St. Simons, which
will no doubt prove interesting read
ing to those at home:
The excursion was a grand success
in every respect save one. the high
wind and sea which caused many of
our Thomasville friends to go below
deck and come up looking very pale.
The boa: could not laud at the peir
but lauded at the mills some three
miles from the hotel.
Mr. 8. L. Mailer I arrived on the
island by the Steamer Pope Gatlin
to day. He took bis family to “the
bluff” before Cuming to St. Simons.
He will spend a few days here before
returning to Thomasville.
Among other Thomasville people
registering at the St. Simons Hotel
are: J. W. Peacock, J. M,~ Black'
(hear, S. L. Hayes, Jr., G. J. Stark
and Judge Hopkins.
Mr. Tom Bottoms is without doubt
a fine excursion manager. His exs
cursion here passed off without a flaw.
Saturday night a turt’e bunt* was
organized and the following geut’emeu
participated: J. W. Dillon, Dr.
Hopkins, O. Chastain, II. and K.
Parker,'Juhn Mitchell and Duncan
Barbee. During the trip the party
came to wbat looked liko a track in
the sand with beach stretching ont
beyond and two of the p*rty stepped
boldly forward, when lo! they wen
into water three feet deep and were
very well soaked. The party returned
to the hotel about 11 p. m. without a
turtle, but in the best of spirits, all
saying they enjoyed it very much.
One of Thomasville’a gentlemen
Mr. saw the word “Deviled
Crabs" on the “menu” last night at
supper but being a good church mem
ber he ordered “Delivered Crabs.”
The turf Saturday'was the higheat
it has been for some time nnd Thom*
aavilie waa well represented.
Dr. J. G. Hopkins and family left
the island to-day. They will visit in
Brunswick.
Messrs. John West and J. W. Peas
