The late D. B. Hill seems to have
undergone a change of heart since his
recent chastising! He’s getting to be
a real goody-goody I This arraign'
ment of thoee naughty men, who trade
in politics for what they may make
out of it, and who go to horse races
and other even lees reputable resorts
was and is certainly encouraging for
those of us who hope and pray for the
ex governor's entire conversion and
santiScation. Go on Davy I One of
your very best friends and most fervid
admirers wishes you God speed and
profilers words of hope from a pious
poet, as follows: “And while the
lamp holds out to burn,” etc. l'he
senator knows the rest, I’m sure.
After reading the foregoing to a
skeptical friend, who has little faith
in religious professions made in the
electric chair, my ears were pained by
the following unsanctified words:
“And when the devil was sick,
The devil a saint would be,
But when the got well,
The devil a saint was he 1”
I was shocked of course, and ad
ministered a stinging rebuke to my
unpious friend.

Woman Suffrage.
It does not appear tha' the short
haired women and ’.he long haired
men who recently met in Atlanta to
air woman’s v.rorgs and demand the
ballot for ti e down trodden sex made
much headway. Southern women
are no', clamoring for the privilege of
getting down in the dirty cesspool ol
politics.
The Schk-y Court v News, edited
by Miss Miry Ilornady, sister oi Mr.
W. P. Horuady, a woman oi the Hue
southern t;p \ has the following to
ay of the Atlanta cor.tvn'i qt:
The women suffragist., have come
acd gone, and, in our opxton, the
proceedings of the convention were
disgusting enough to check tin: growth
of this mo-emeut in Georgia I’ney
came south witf. the solo purpose of
making couverts and going on the
principle “that vinegar never catches
flies,” Col. Susan and her followers
had nothing but honeyed words lor
the south and southern women.
We believe the result of the meet
ing will be a stronger opposition to
woman suffrage. r Ihe women of Geor
gia will be loath to shatter the pedes
tal upon which southern chivalry has
placed them to descend into the po
litical arena. They many not be able
to preside over the conventions and
make stump speeches, but in every
taing that has made this a great state
they have been important factors, and
the silent influence cf one su:h
worth a thousand clamoring for the
ballot. Let the strong minded sisters
return to their neglected'families;
are quite able to take care of our
selves and too well satisfied with our
“rights” to desire the chance they
advocate.
Chances of Free Coinage
Washington, Feb. 19—What will
be the fate of the fr-.e coinage bill
should the senate pass one,
that is the question that is being ask
ed on the house side of the capitol.
Careful inquiry leaves the matter in
doubt, with the chances against actioD
on the bill. The hitch is with the
committee on coinage, weights and
measures, to which the bill would be
referred under the rules should it
reach the house. Mr. Biattd, dem.
of Missouri, chairman ol the commits

The weather, in its severity, in the
protracted period of its stay, in thn

feature has been the great snowstorms
that have whitened all the southern
stales, including the furthermost limits
in Florida, Louisiana*and Texas. Ir.
tho last named state, according to the
almost incredible reports, the snow on
the level in some localities was ten or

the snow was over ten feet deep. That

the bill out of the committee should it

the tree coinage law of 1S37, but has
been unsuccess.ul. The anti-silver
members of the committee do not at'

quorum and preventing action on all
measures favorable to the white met

ever, the fate of a free silver bill is still
doubtful, and Mr. Bland fears that
the vote would be against it. Accordi

would stand 9 to 8 against the bill.
In Danger.
War on the big theatre hat and also
the pufty sleeves now worn by fair
woman is on in the west. An ex
change says:
"Senator Altpeter has introduced
in the Wisconsin legislature an anti.
high theatre hat bill that includes big
■leeves as well as hats. The Jiill pro
Tides that when a woman wearing the
proscribed habiliments enters the
door of the theatre their immediate
removal shall be demanded by the
manager; and in case of refusal
neglect to comply with the demand
the offender may be summarily eject
ed."
Altpeter, if he lived in some states,
would likely be mobbed. The women
of Wisconsin will likely make his life
• burden.
Solid Sense
The Savannah Press observes that
it is a remarkable fact that ia all
parts of the country north, east, south
and west, business men—men who
understand financial matters—support
the administration in its efforts to
maintain the nation’s credit. Those
who are supposed to be against the
administration have little acquaintance
with financial questions. Congress is
permitting itself to be influenced by
the latter class. Do senators and
representatives think that class has
the greater number of votes ? It now
looks as if this congress would have a
place in history as the weakest of all
the congresses. Even democrats ia
the south do not hesitate to say they
will rejoice when it passes out of ex
istence. They say this knowing the
next congress will be republican, but
they do not believe a republican con*
gress can be worse than this.”
The Valdosta Times thinks the av
erage congressman has become
demoralized liy the populistic outcry
against gold that ho will shy worse
than a moon-eyed mule at any men
tion of tho precious metal. “The
eleventh district of Georgia,” says the
Times, “has the proud distinction of
being represented by a man of con
victions and one who is not afraid to
face all the bugaboos and scarecrows
propped up on the road side by the
Blandites and otberites who were vot
ed a seat at home during the session of
the next congress,"
