Detroit, Feb. 21.—Reports from all
sections of this state show that ono of
the worst blizzards of the season set in
yesterday afternoon and still prevails.
At Gaylord tho passenger train going
north on the Michigan Central is
buried in eight feet of snow just out*
side the villago. All business is
suspended. Red City reports all
train* running, badly delayed, and
many have been, abandoned. At
Cedar Springs and Central Lake rail
road traffic is abandoned. At Petoskey
all business is at a standstill. Trains
are from six to ten hours late. Detroit
has not yet suffered from the storm,
but the incoming trains on all roads
are badly delayed.
The poet cf the Lawreucevillc News
sings of the weather as follows:
“Oh, the snow, the beautiful snow,
Filling the North nncl south below—
From off the roof it works to the street,
From thence on down to our cold bare I e!.
“We onco loved tbo scow, the beautiful
snow.
We didn’t look out for the bread, you ■ ' '
But now as we hustle for the wood :
such
We've learned notto love the snow icf
much.”

Four Frozen to Death
New Orleans, La., Feb. 21.—Among
the sad casualties of tbe snow storm
was the death ot a hunting party
the woods of the Alliance plantation
about nineteen miles below New Or
leans. Four men set out for a day’s
hunt in the woods under the guidance
of John Bannister, a colored nimrod
of repute in Plaquimine’s parish,
skilled in the art of deer stalkiDg and
simplo hunting. No tears were enter
tained when the party remained out
all night, but when they did not re*
turn the next day, a searching party
went out, and after much difficulty in
struggling through the snow drifts, the
four unfortunate men were found
frozen to death."

The ‘'whoozee” through which Sa
vannah has just passed, will long be
remembered. You say you don’t
know what ' whoozee’’ meant? Why,
that’s the western term for something
worse than a local blizzard. A "whoo
zee’’ is a widespread cold area that
paralyzes the recollection of the oldest
inhabitants —Savannah Press.
“Whoozee” is a good word. It
will rhyme with “whoopee.” How
ever; there isn’t much cause for

Dishonoring Washington and Lee.
North Carolina was carried by the
republicans and populists at the late
election. They have full control of
the legislature. The following dis'
patch will give the reader an idea of
how low thatBtate has fallen :
Raleigh, N. C., Feb. 21.—A great
sensation was created here to-day by
the adoption in the house of a resolu
tion introduced by a negro that when
the general assembly do adjourn it
adjourn in honor of Frederick Doug
las. The resolution was passed by a
vote of 34 to 20, all the democrats
voting against it.
A resolution to adjourn on Feb. 22
in honor of Washington’s birthday,
which is a legal holiday in the state,
was voted down,
The same body a'so refused to ad
journ in honor of Gen. Lee on Jan.
19."
Casting a slur on George Washing
ton and Robert E. Lee and honoring
a negro, Fred Douglas. The world
movos—backward. If tbe people of
North Carolina do not rise up at the
next election and hurl these hybrids
from place and power, they deserve
not fortune’s favors.
