Confederate Pensions.
Georgia will soon be paying indi.
gent confederate soldiers a pension
though it will be a small one. Per
haps there are many who have Dever
studied the provisions of the act.
The old law provided that the pen*
sioner must be a citizen of the state
since Oct. 26, 18S8. The new law,
however, contains many different pros
visions, and is imended to apply to
those who did not come under the
laws formerly in existence and who
were not receiving pensions prior to
its passage.
The new law provides that the ap
plicant must be a citizen of Georgia
since JaD. 1, t894, show that he was
in the Georgia army for a period of at
least six months, and that he is unable
to support himself by bis own exer
tions or labors. Applicants must
submit proof of these requirements
and must undergo examination to
show they are not able to support and
maintain themselves by their own
labors. The amount of the pension
in such cases will be $6o. The state
has appropriated $30,009 to pay these
pensions for 1895, and the same
amount for 1896. It is made a mis
demeanor for claim agents or any
persons to collect a fee for being in
strumental in securing one of these
pensions, and no person already en
rolled on the pension lists of the state
shall be entitled to an additional pen
sion under this act. Soldiers hereto
fore allowed pensions will get the
same amounts they have been receiv
ing, this law being intended to apply
to new applicants.
