Since snow fell in Tampa and North

speaking about “a new south,” says
an exchange.
While drunk the other day John L.

The most startling blizzard yarn in
Georgia is published by the Irvington
Bullet, It says: ‘‘A young mao kiss'
ed his girl good night last week and
the tears caused by partiog froze their
lips together and the mother had to
heat a kettle of water before be could
leave.”
If there be still decency in North
Carolina, the populistic rule that
honors Fred Douglass and looks con
temptuously on the memories of
Washington and Lee, should be of
short duration. The action of the
legislature is certainly a dark stain
upon the state, but we are sure it is a
gross misrepresentation of the good
people of North Carolina, says the
Columbus Euquirer-Sun.
Money for the Military.
Atlanta, Ga., Feb. *5.—The dispo
sition of the state'military appropria
tion will probably be decided on some
time this week: Gov. Atkinson has
already had several preliminary con
ferences with the military department.
From what can be learned it is not
probable that there will be any en
campment this year. ..The $17,500
appropriated by the legislature is not
sufficient to provide for even half ot
the troops in camp for a sufficient
lengthjof time to be of practical value
to them and it is, therefore, more
than likely that the money will he used
to supply overcoats and other equip,
ments as apportioned out to the com
panics to buy army euits,
A movement has been set on foot
to hold a big military encampment io
Atlanta during the exposition. Capt,
Barnard of the Troup Hussars was in
the city to-day on this mission. The
plan of those behind the movement is
to muster all the military of the state
here for three days camping on the
exposition grounds, just as is done at
the regular state encampment. It has
been suggested that the military ap
propriation could be advantageously
used for this sort of an encampment
but this part of the plan has so far
received no encouragement from the
governor or military department.

The Funeral of Douglass-
Washington, Feb. 25.—Shortly be
fore 0 o’clock this morning the re
mains of Frederick Douglass were re
tnoved ;from his late residence to the
Metropolitan African Methodist Epis
copal church, where the body lay in
state for some hours, and was viewed
by immense crowds. The funeral

mud a decree that no mules should be'
permitted to cross the border to Gao
temi’a. Some 209 mules belonging
to au American contractor were
stopped by the custom officers at Ta-
pachula. This morning the foreign
officers telegraphed a permit that the
mules might go on. As the prohibi
tion of the export of mules was a war
measure, the government’s action is a
sign that alt danger as to open hostil

McKinley is Their Man.
Savannah republicans are said to
favor McKinley as,, the presidential
candidate of their party. While their
votes at the election can do him no
good their votes in the national con
vention "can. McKinley, like old
John Sherman, doubtless realizes that
when nominating time comes the vote
ot the delegate from the south counts
as much as that of the delegate from
the east or west and we may expect
him to do some tall catering to this
section between now and the spring of
1896.—Savannah Press.
Major McKinley will no doubt have
a considerable following at the south
and it looks just now that, the south
would hold the balance of power io
the next republican convention. The
indications are that the republicans
in the south will make an effort to be
represented by a better element in
the next convention. It is a notori
ous fact that for maoy years the repub
lican contingent from the south in all
national conventions has been a pun*
chasable quaotity. And it is not un
likely that many of the same stripe
will slip ioto the convention of 1886.

Editor Richardson, of the Enquirer
Sun, Columbus, proceeds to relieve
and enlighten the Constitution as fol
lows:
The Atlanta Constitution has a cu
riosity to know whether the go’dbug
democrats propose Io try to nominate
a candidate next time. Assuming
that by goldbugs is meant tie large
majority of the democratic party that
is s'aodiog flat-looted on the Chicago
platform, demanding unequivocally
the parity oi the free coined silver
dollar with the gold dollar, we are
tree to say that their next nominee
may look to our Atlanta contemporary
like a goldbug candidate. But he will
be a good democrat, and he will not
be a free silver crank.

A northern paper, the Philadelphia
Record, views the action of the North
Carolina legislature in refusing to ad.
jours in honor of Washington’s or
Leefs birthday, and then adjourning
in honor of Fred Douglass in this
light:
In refusing to adjourn in honor of
the birthday of Washington and Lee
the’.legislature of North Carolina
business should be preferred before
holiday pleasuring, patriotic regard
for the memory of the Father of his
Country or the birth of the great
Southern General. But the adjourn
ment out of respect to the memory of
Frederick Douglass which followed
was an unfortunate anti-climax. It
was, perhaps, a. pretty bit of buns
combo on the part ot the fusion legis
lature to curry favor with the colored
voter, but it should not have followed
so soon after the turning down of
Washington and Leo.
