Congress has
until Friday,
adjourned over
{ Two people froze to death in St.
LouiB on Tuesday night.
Now watch the jingoes in con
congress get up on their hind legs
and howl.
Flem duBignou will address the
legislature next Tuesday night
on tlie financial qustion.
Lon Livingston will probably
declare war against England
some time next wesk.
There's no dodging in the presi
dent’s message. It is a straight
forward, manly document.
The unanswerable message of
the president is a thunderbolt in
the campB of the free silver men.
Heury G. Turner pronounces
the president’s message “an able
st'te paper." And Turner is a
judge of state papers.
Senator Call has introduced a
resolution to recognize the Cuban
insurgents as belligerents. The
senator is somewhat belligerent
himself.
Tfte president has appointed
Rufus W. Peckbam, one of the
mest distinguished lawyers in
New York, to the vacancy on the
supreme bench caused by the
death of Justice Jackson.
Secretary Hoke Smitn address
ed the Georgia legislature on the
financial question on Tuesday
night. And it goes without say
ing that he made a most convinc
ing argument against free silver.
The secretary understands the
subject thoioughly.
Referring to the president’s
message Ben Tillman says: "I
see nothi ig in the message that
indicates statesmanship." Ben’s
obliquity of vision in this instance
is very natural. His sort never
rise to the height where true
statesmanship isdiscernable. Now
had the president shown himself a
demagogue, Tillman would have
appreciated the message.
Here is what Bob Iugersoll
thinks about the nominee of the
republican party: E
“At present Reed and McKin
ley are the most prominent. A
good many are talking Allison,
and I have heard mauy say they
were for General Miles. It is
probable that Reed will have New
England, maybe New York and
Pennsylvania. These states have
about 214 votes. That will be a
good start. McKinley will have
about the same I should think,
but no one can tell what may hap
pen. A thousand things now not
known or dreamed of may deter
mine the matter. Maybe a darts
horse will be chosen. No one can
tell what luck, accident, awk-
wardnen and design may do.’*
The Pres dent’s Message.
The first message of the presi
dent to the 64th congress was
read in the house and senate on
Tuesday. It is a lengthy docu
ment and deals with the subjects
touched upon in that clear, lucid
and vigorous style which charac
terizes Mr, Cleveland.
Considerable space is given to
foreign relations. References
under this head are made to the
Armenian troubles, the insurrec
tion in Cuba, Alaskan boundary,
the dispute between England and
Venezuela nud the imprisonment
of Waller, an American citizen, by
France. The president takes a
firm stand f r the protection of
Americans and American inter
ests, but there is no brag, bluster
or jingoism indulged in. Ho re
endorses the Monroe doctrine, aud,
while sympathizing with Cuba,
says that this government must
observe its treaty stipulations with
Spain.
The president devotes a good
portion of the message to the finan
cial question. He treats the sub
ject in a clear, concise and con
vincing Btyle. Congress does not
lack light on the subject. Few
men, if any, have given the snl -
ject more careful and patient
thought and study than has Mr
Cleveland. His deductions and
conclusions will attract the atten
tion of statesmen and all others.
They are forcible aud honest
There is nothing of the dema
gogue to be found in a single line
or sentence. Fearless, and re
gardless of consequences, tlief resi
dent talks very plainly. As in
the case when he launched his
famous tarilF message, he argues
for honest money and against the
free aud unlimited coinage of
silver at 16 to 1, not taking into
accouut whether it would affect
him or not, but pleads for the good
of the whole country, for the pro
tection of the people, against
debased currency.
' In conclusion the president says:
“1 have ventured to express rny-
«elf on this subject with earnest
ness and plainness cf speech be
cause I cannot rid myself of the
belief that th»re lurks in the pro
position for the tree coinage of
silver, so strongly approved and
so enthusiastically ad ocaled by a
multitude of my countrymen, a
serious menace to our prosperity
and an insidious temptat ion of our
people to wauder from the ai egi-
auce they owe to public and pri
vate integrity. It is because 1
do not distrust the good faith and
sincerity of those who press this
scheme that 1 have imperfectly
out with zeal, submitted m
thoughts upon this momentous
subject.
I cannot refrain frem begging
them to re-examine their views
aud bel.efs in the light of patri
otic reasou and familiar experi
ence, and to weigh again and
again the consequences of such
legislation as lheir efforts have
invited. Even the continued agi
tation of the subject adds greatly
to the difficulties of a dangerous
financial situation already forced
upou us.
“In conclusion, I especially en
treat the people's representatives
in congress, who are charged with
the responsibility of inaugurating
measures for the eateiy and pros
perity of our common country, to
comply and effectively cousider
the ills of our critical financial
plight.
1 have suggest'd a remedy vOf*
which my judgment approves. I
desire, however, to assure the
congress that I am prepared to co
operate with them in perfecting
auy other measure promising
thorough aud practical relief, and
that I will gladly labor with them
evjry patriotic endeavor to
further the interests and guard
the welfare of our countrymen,
whom in our respective places cf
duty we
serve.”
