After Lynchers
Governor Atkinson has sent in
a special message to the legisla
ture on the snbject of lynchirg.
Here are two of bis suggestions:
1st. That a law be enacted that
will provide a penalty for the
failure to obey the summons of a
sheriff to act as a posse coroitatus.
2d. That it be made the duty
of the solicitor general, in every
case where be has reason to be
lieve that an arresting officer has
failed to make an arrest when it
1 00 waB in his power to do so, to draw
a rule nisi against him, so that
if the facts on trial warrant it, he
may be punished as prescribed in
section 8937, to wit: “Fined,
imprisoned or removed from office
in the manner prescribed by the
constitution and laws."

meets again to-day.
They want Moody to preach in
Augusta. We thought Augusta
was a moral city.
Steve Clay is wrong on the sil
ver question, but he is right on
the dueling issue.
The friends of the Bush bill
propose to move for a reconsidera
tion of the vote on that measure.
The democrats in congress
should sit Bteady in the boat. The
wind is likely to be pretty high.
Populist Senators Confer.
Washington, Dec. 4.—The pop
ulist members of the senate held
a conference yesterday afternoon
for the purpose of consulting
about the situation in the senate
and, as Mr. Peffer said, to
strengthen their political acquain
tance with each other. There
were present Senators Peffer, Al
len, Kyle, Butler, Jones, (Nevada)
and Stewart. It was agreed that
they should stand together as a
political party and vote solidly,
at least up tosuch a time as might
be demonstrated what the repub
licans and democrats contemplate
doing. No effort will be made by
the populists to organise tho sen
ate.

Will Reed be on his good be
havior ? Many think he will.
There is no telling, however.
The equalization bill bus been
defeated in the legislature. This
was a mistake. The bill should
have passed.
Reed in opening the 54th com
gress used a gavel made from t
bench at which Gen. Grant work'
ed as a tanner. It was sent from
Galena, Ill.
The Porte still holds the Bos
phorus, but the powers are hover
ing about the entrance with great
war ships, A spark would set
the conflagration to going.
The responsibility of protecting
the treasury reserve now rests with
congress. What are they going
to do about it ? The republicans
being in the majority must an
swer.
The republican vote was not
swelled in the States which held
elections this fall. It was the
democratic stay-at-homes who did
the business. That's one thing
to be thankful for.—Quincy Her

Among the many farces played
by the police of Atlanta, none
was so supremely ridiculous
and senseless as the searching of
the Myers residence five weeks
after the escape for Will Myers.
A Savannah, Florida and Wes
tern railway train was wrecked
on Wednesday night fifteen miles
noith of Jacksonville. The Pull-
man sleeper turned completely
over, injuring a number of pas
sengers. The accident was caused
by the rails spreading.
A Dooly couuty man gives this
inventory of his one mule crop—
11 vo bales of cotton, 600 bushels of
corn, 200 bushels of peas, 100

of meat and all the fodder, hay
and pea vines that he can use,
besides the side lines of chickens,

Here’s to Grover.
William R. Leaken, Esq.,

saying :
‘•Knights of St. Andrew and
guests, rise to your feet, drink
this bumper to our chief magis
trate, Stephens Grover Cleveland,
and let me give this toast:
A statesman—yet friend of truth, of eoul elu-
cere;
In action ftlthful and In honor clear.
He breaks do promises, serves do seltish etuis;
He takes no bribes, betrays do friends.”
St. Andrew’s Day" was fitly
observed in Savannah on Monday.
A dinner distinctly Scotch was
served at the De Soto. John R.
Young, wearing the plaid of the
Clan Alpine, presided at one of
the tables. A number of speeches
were made. “The land o’ cakes
and Bobbie Burns,” was the theme
of Pleas Stovall.
St. Louis is ready to put up'the
“scads" for a national convention
St. Louis is an unlucky place for
the democrats. We got left badly
there in 1888. And, besides,
Henry Richardson lost his watch
and pocket book at the conven
tion. It is safe to say that he, at
least, will oppose St. Louis.
Iowa has launched Allison’s
presidential boom. In Ohio the
friends of Governor McKinley are
making preliminary arrangements
for what they claim will be a win
ning fight. In the meantime Tom
Reed, with gavel poised, is keep
ing an eye on the Maine chance.
After the people have carefully
read Mr. Cleveland’s views on the
free coinage of silver at 10 to 1,
the leaders of the silver party will

Several ambitious gentlemen in
the third district are anxious to
step into Mr. Crisp’s congressional
