This district has always been
represented by a sound money
man, ami lias been generally con
sidered a sound money district.
It is generally supposed that
Copt. Hammond, of Thomasville,
one of the ablest statesmen in the
district, will be brought out.

Legislative Work
Atlanta, Dec. 6.—The house
consumed nearly all the morning'
in an attempt to reconsider the
bill passed last night pensioning
confederate soldiers and to pass a
bill cutting down the appropria
tion io tlie state university.
Mr. Jenkins introduced a bill
providing for chartering state
banks and a bill to issue $240,000
in bonds in denominations of $5
to pay pensions, tliev being good
to pay taxes or any debt ot the
state.
The senate passed the bill pre
venting cities from taxing insur
ance brokers any more than they
tax regular insurance agents.

Bailey, of Texas, are working to

democrats oppose free silver, hence
the action of the rabi 1 silver men.
The death of Mrs. H. fi. Haines
is announced in Atlanta. She was
the wife of Col. H. S. Haines,
and a sister of Col. C. D. Owens.
Col. Haines has but recently
moved to Atlanta. He will have
the sympathy of many firends in
his sad bereavement.
Reed, it would seem, would
have congress pursue a course of
masterly inictivity. That big
majority may become very active
notwithstanding Reed's well
known wishes. They will all
want to do something.
Henry G. Turner pronounces
the president’s message “an able
state paper.” And Turner is a
judge of state papers.
