There are already signs of a
Kilkenny cat fight between the
republicans in congress. Let the
fight proceed to proceed.
Freezing in Florida.
Jacksonville, Fla.—Dec. 7.
Freezing weather extended as far
south this morning as Tampa and
Titusville. A line between these
two points defines 32 degrees
isotherm.
They Want to Fight.
The News thus summarizes some
jingo gentlemen who are strutting
around with a chip on their shoul
der, daring some one, anyone, to
knock it off:
“Allen, of Nebraska, wants to
fight France because of the Waller
incident. Morgan, of Alabama,
wantsjto fight England because
of the Bering sea incident and on
general principles. Livingston,
of Georgia, wants to fight Eng
land because of the V enezue an
incident. Hoar, of Massachusetts,
wants to fight Turkey because of
the Armenian outrages. Call., of
Florida, wants to fight Spain be
cause of tbe Cuban affair. Lodge
and Candler, of New England,
want to fight anybody and every
body because we are bully bors.”
He Is Consistent.
The president has been cr.ti-
cised for opposing free silver and
charged with inconsistency. He
stands to-day just where he al
ways stood. Here is a latter writ
ten before his nomination, which
ought to shut the mouths of those
making these charges:
New York, February 10, 1891.
E. Ellery Andersou, Chairman:
Dear Sir—I have this afternoon
received your note, inviting me
to attend to-morrow evening the
meeting called for the purpose of
voicing the opposition of our city
to “the free coinage of silver in
the Uuited Slates.”
I shall not be able to attend and
address the meeting as you request,
but I am glad that the business
interests of New York are at last
to be heard on this subject. It
surely cannot be necessary for me
to make a formal expression of
mv agreement with those who be
lieve that the greatest peril would
be invited by the adoption of the
scheme embraced iu the measure
now pending in congress for the
unlimited coinage of silver at our
mints.
If we have developed an unex
pccted capacity for the assimila
tion of a largely increased vol
ume of this currency, and even if
we have demonstrated the useful
ness of such an increase, these
conditions fall far short of insur
ing us against disaster if, in the
present situation, we enter upon
the dangerous and reckless exper
iment of free, unlimited and in
dependent silver coinage.
Very truly yours,
Orover Cleveland.

The Exhibitors’ Association at
the exposition, composed of lead
ing men from almost, every state
in the union, and representing
every slictie of political opinion,
met the other day aud passed the
fo'lowing set of resolutions:
“Wnereas, The public expres
sions of representative men who
have v’sited the Atlanta exposi
tion have been of a couciiatory
character, marked by evidence of
the broadest patriotism and tbe
most s'ucere fraternity; and .
“Whereas, This characteristic
has been t-ue rega-ding the ex-
pressious of dialit>nistieii visitors,
whether lliose visitors came from
the north, the east, the west or
the south: and
“Whereas; The friendsaud pro
moters of the Atlanta fair, by rea
son of the many fraternal expres
sions their enterprise had provok
ed from patriots from all parts of
the union, hrd begun to rega’d
the more friendly relations be
tween the different sections of
our common couniry as one of the
best and most gratifying results
likely to g-ow out of their stu-
penduous eiteiprise; therefore,
b® it .. .
“Resolved, by the Exhibitors
Association of sa.d Atlanta expo
sition, a body composed largely
Aroerici.i til-tens and repre
senting all parts of the union and
all shades of political opinion,
J oat we dee pi v deplore the on e
marked aud flag-ant exception to
the he-eiofore prevailing expres-
sioiis of fra'.ecuit7, brotherly love,
patriotism and loyalty that was
made manifest at this exposition
on South Carolina day, and in
wh ! ch ex-governor of that state,
Ben Tillman, and the present
give- nor, JohnGa y Evans, were
tue offende-s.
Resolved, That we know, from
on contact and hite-course for
the past few mouths with south
ern people, ihat in their disloyal
ty and inflamaiory ntte.-ances
those two ranting demagogues are
a libel on the beite.-c'ass ot south
erners and do not give voice to
lie prevailing soutl'e'-n sentiment.
“Resolved, That we svmpathize
with the southern states of our
union in the affliction which com
pels them to endure such blots on
their inner worln and such clogs
to the^r meri.ed progress; and we
especially sympathize with the
ignorance that must yet prevail
in South Carolina to make it pos
sible for such scum to rise to the
urface.
“Resolved, That for the fame
and good name of the Atlanta ex
position, at which these men were
unfortunately permitted to speak,
we denounce their speeches as be-
}ug devoid of reason, sense and
patriotism, and we repudiate the
speakers. 11 this we feel confi
dent. we a-e but voicing the sense
of our counirv aud the earnest
feelings of the lieuer people of all
the southern s.ales.
•‘Resolved, That we sympatize
also with 'he management ol this
exposition that under the cloak of
temporal authority two such fan
nies should have been able to in
trude their utterances upon the
olhe-vvse healthy and satisfactory
p-oceed ogs that have character
ized llrs enterprise. But while
dismissing the utterances of these
men as uuworvhy of further notice
from our association or the country,
we do not iorget that in the gen
eral economy of nature mankind
must have his tumbles and com
munities their afflictions. It is
not many yea-s since that Cali
fornia was greatly annoyed by a
brace of bandits, known as Evans
and bouiag, aud tbe exhibition
witnessed here on tbe 28th of No
vember is but au evidence that
fcjouib Carolina, in its turn, is en
during, through its own discre
tions, a season of torment from its
Tillman and Evans.

This man Tillman’s coarse and
profane talk about using his pitch-
fork on the president aud his ill-
timed remarks were liberally
quoted and appa-enlly approved
by the anti-Cleveland papers in
Geo-gia. Not one of them have,
so far as we have seen, had the
manhood to even er.ticise, in a
mild roa mer, the coawe and bru
tal talk of Tinman. We call the
attention of these anti-Cleveland
