Missionary Figures.
An estimate of the collections
during the present century for
foreign missions has been about
$75,000,000, while $100,000,000
bas been expended for missions at
home.
The true missionary spirit is the
spirit of Christ, and is drawn out
for every lost soul, whether a black
African, yellow Chinaman or white
American. A Christian yearns,
not only for the salvation of those
who will not heed the gospel bell,
but, having felt the throbbings of
the great heart of our Heavenly
Father as it yearns for the nations
goes out in prayerful sympathy
for those who know not of his
love.
The Rev. John Geddie and his
wife, from Nova Scotia, landed on
Aneityum in 1848. In 1852 the
Rev. John Inglis and wife, from
Scotland, landed on the other side
of the same island. The natives
took an interest from the first,
and in a few years they saw 3,500
savages throwing away their idols
and turn to worship the true God.
They slowly unlearned their
heathenism, but surely, hopefully
learned Christ and civilization.
Think you that missions pay ?
The China Island Mission was
founded in 1805, by Rev. 8. Hud
son Taylor, and as to character is
evangelical, interdenominational
and international. Upon its staff
are 034 foreign missionaries, in
cluding associates, and 860 native
helpers. The station numbers 112
with 118 out stations, and are lo
cated in four;een provinces. Over
4,500 members are in fellowship
with 134 organized churches.
It is figured out that the Chris
tian churches of America give on
the average one sixty-fourth of
their ordained men to foreign
missionary work; that it takes
7,802 church members to support
one foreign missionary, and that
the average given per member is
but forty cents,
There are about 8,000,000
people in France who report them
selves in the census returns as “of
no religious belief.”—Methodist
Review of Missions.
