Protect the Trees.
The mistletoe suggests only
good cheer and festival occasions.
Its round berries glisten with a
pearly g:ow and its green bows
give unwonted privileges. The
very wo-d is synonimons with
sentiment and romance, with love
and tenderness. It is a prime
favorite with poets and fills a large
space in the literature of love
and good fellowship. Its very
weakness is its strength, for it
clings for support to the massive
oak and becomes wedded to tbat
g ! ant of the forest. Winter storms
cannot shake away its hold on this
strong ftieiid, neither can the
summer’s sun dry out it’s life
blood. High above the sordid
earth it bangs, complacent in its
borrowed strength, while it feeds
upon the fresh air and the juices
of the oak. But there is another
side to the mislletoe. While it
clings it also saps. It resembles
not so much the vine as it does the
vampire. The pearly lustre of its
fruit and its evergreen leaves are
but the transformed life of the oak.
The oak must die that the mistle
toe may live; not bodily, as though
blighted by lightuiug, but limb
by limb. Examine any tree where
this leach-like plant has rooted it
self for any length of time and it
will be found tbat the limbs are
all dead beyond the mistletoe and
often the entire limb. The whole
tree is also affected, for it loses its
luxuriance and richness. Hencet
forth it is infested by a persisten-
and pernicious enemy, which shall
finally prove its destruction.
Scores of the trees of Thomasville
are filled with mistletoe. It
would seem to be good policy for
the city to have it removed. To
spend money planting trees and
then for tbe sake of a few dollars
to allow shuck trees to be destroy
ed when they have grown to a
useful siz*,appears to be a thought
less course. E. M. Mallette.
