And Boston, the city of

The bill adding three more
justices of the supreme court lias
passed. It is to be submitted to
the people.
The republicans talk about
tackling the tariff - again. We
thought they got. enough of that,
in the last presidential election.
It is sai l that, John Sherman's
friends will again present his
name for president. Then watch
Alger’s.“bar’l,” get in its work.
It swamped John once before.
The Barnesville Gazette ex
presses this well fortified opinion:
“Superior court judges should be
paid a good salary, certainly not
less than $3,000 a year. The pres
ent salary is not sufficient.”
A writer declares that President
Cleveland, when squirrel hunting,
is a little diary about climbing
fences. The president at least
was never charged with sitting on
or straddling the fence.
The Barnesville Gazette says:
“Democracy is everlasting. lion.
Robert Toombs made a speech to
Tammany Hall in 1872, in which
he truthfully said, ‘they tell us
that the democracy is dead. If
so, my friends, iay r not aside your
mourning garments, for you will
shortly bo summoned to attend the
death-bed of the republic.’ ”
Boston Goes Democratic.
Boston, Mass., Dec. 10.—Ninety
precincts in Boston give Josiah
yuincy, dem., for mayor, a gain
of .’t,188 votes over Peabody’s vote
of last year. Quincy is elected.
Norwood Nominated.
Atlanta, Dec. 10.—The nomina
tion of ex-Senator T. M. Norwood
to be judge of the city court of
.Savannah by Governor Atkinson
to-duy caused a panic of indigna
tion in the ranks of the Chatham
county delegation in the legisla
ture, and bids fair to develop
some sensational matter to-mor
row, when the nomination comos
up for continuation in the senate.
Senator Osborne and the house
delegation have been in an excit
ed stated of resentment ever since
tbe announcement of the appoint
ment by tbe governor, and they
are leaving no stone unturned to
Jtfferson vs- Jingoes
There were probably jingoes in
Jefferson’s day, but it lias fallen
to this day and generation to pro
duce the largest number of blat
ant, howling demagogues who
would, upon the slightest pretext,
involve the country in war.
they would not be in it eithcij^^
Thomas Jefferson sent, a me?
sage to congress cn the 17th of
October, 1803, in which lie said
“.Separated by a wide ocean
from the nations of Europe and
from the political interests which
entangle them togethei, with pro
ductions and wants which render
our commerce and friendship use
I’ul to them and their’s to ns,

We should b3 most, unwise, indeed
were we to cast away the singular
blessing of t! e position in wliicl
nature has placed us, the opportu
nity she lias endowed us with, ol
pursuing at. a distance from for-
eign contentions the paths ol in
dustry, peace and happiness; of
cultivating general friend.-.hij
and of bringing collisions of in
terest to the umpire of reason rath
er than of force. How desirable
then, it must be. i i a gpvernmen
like ours, to see its citizens adopt,
individually, the views, the in
terests and the conduct, which their
country should pursue; divest.iii::
themselves of those passions am!
partialities which tend to lesse -
useful friendship and to embar
ra?s and embroil us m tne calami-
Vtius scenes of Europe.”
We commend the sober sense of
the author of independence to the
modern jingo. But he is labor
ing under the delusion that lie
knows more than Jefferson. No
loubt Lon Livingston lias a very
poor opinion of Jefferson's ah lily
as a statesman. It is easy to im
agine what Jefferson would think
of Livingston weie he living
now.
(\>mmenting on the above ex
tract from the father of democra
cy, the Macon Telegraph says:
What pussilauimoiis doctrine
this must, be considered by the
American jiii‘.o of to-day. If the
words quoted had appeared in
Cleveland's recent message he
would have been denounced from
one end of the country to the oth
er by republicans and anti-Cleve
land democrats as an undisguised
traitor—a tory who was trying to
disgijace bis country and sell his
most precious rights and interests
to foreigners.
“Nevertheless, Jefferson was
right in tliis matter, as in so many
others, and Cleveland, in refusing
to become a foreign baiting,
bumptious jingo, shows himself to
be a Jeffersonian democrat, in this
respect, as in so many ethers.”
In tlm Race
Hon. Fleming duBignon for
mally opened his campaign for
senator in ail address before tbe
Geoigia legislature on Tuesday
evening. He made a magnificent,
speech, placing himself squarely
in opposition to free silver. The
campaign may be said to^be fairly
on, Crisp and Hoke Smith botli
having entered the lists.
Referring to Mr. duBignon’s
speech, the News says :
His speech contains a clear cut
and unanswerable argument for
sound money, lie sees tbe falla
cies anil mistakes of thesilverites,
and points them out. Evidently
bo has never been touched by tbe
silver craze."

o’clock Mr. Brookin stepped on
the veranda to gee u drink of wa

two charges of buckshot into his
body, ^causing almost instant
death. There is no clue to the
murderer. Deputy Brookin was
