The Horticultural Society.
The Twenty-First Annual ses
sion of the Georgia State Horti
cultural Society Will be held in
Savannah on August 4, 5, 6 and
7, 1897. The object of the asso
ciation is first of all to promote
the progress of horticulture in our
state. To accomplish this, earn
est workers must co-operate with
their experience and scientific at
tainments. The reunion is, there
fore, expected to be composed of
working members, looking toward
the material interests of this com
monwealth. The society was or
ganized in 1876 by a few public-
spirited citizens, who have faith
fully labored since to promote tbe
fruit-growing industry of Geor
gia; and aid In tbe higher educa
tion of its people. They have
paid with their purse and person,
not only freely giving their labor,
but paying for the publication of
its proceedings, which have been
distributed free wherever they
could serve the aims of the society.
The only revenue of the society i s
derived from tbe annual member
ship fees and as this is limited the
society is hampered in its scope.
The society needs the co-operation
of every progressive citizen of
Georgia. If you cannot attend
the sessions of the society, aid it
by becoming a member and enable
it to enlarge its sphere of useful
ness
The past work of tbe society has
caused a wonderful development
of the fruit growing industry,
which of late has givt n severs se ;
tions of ihe state a most rapid in
crease in its land values, as well
as an intelligent class of settlers
from other states. All horticul
turists, fruit growers and pro
gressive agriculturists are earn
estly and cordially invited to send
such articles for exhibition as
will make tbe display of Georgia
grown fruits, flowers and vegeta
bles creditable to the skill and
progress of its people. It is ear
nestly hoped that there will be a
full attendance of membeis from
svery section of the state, that
concentrated information and
experience of fruit growers may
be obtained, thus aiding the soci
ety to perfect the several cata
logues of fruits and .vegetables
adapted to each geographical di
vision of the state. The cata
logues are now the recognized re
liable guides of tbe fruit growers
of Georgia, and have bad a most
wonderful influence in developing
its fruit growing interests. The
officers of the organization are:
P. J. Berckmans, president; L. A.
Bercbmans, treasurer, and G. H.
Miller, of Rome, secretary. Under
the leadership of sucb able officers
tbe organization could not fail to
prosper. Among the papers which
will be presented are tbe follow
ing:
1. “Small Fruit Novelties,” by
II. H. Starnes, horticulturist,
Georgia Experimental Station.
2. “Gathering and Marketing
Strawberry Crops,” by T. J. Lein-

3. “The Influence of Plant Food
on tbe Qualities and Properties of
Fruit,” by Prof. H. E. Stock-
bridge.
4. “Tbe Cause of Disease in
Plants,” by Prof. S. F. Earle,
Auburn, Ala.
5. “Irrigation forsmall Fruits,"
by Charles Deckner, Atlanta, Ga.
6. “Peacan Culture at the
South,” by Dr. 0. Faust, Bam-
berg, S. C.
7. “The Adaptation of Fruits
aud Other Foods to Climate," by
R. F. JobnsoD, Smithville, Ga.
8. “Is the LeConte Pear a Fail
ure?” by J. B. Wight, Cairo, Ga.
9. “Tbe Time of Flowering of
Varieties of Plums, and its Impor
tance to the Plum Orchardist,”
by Prof. T. D. Munson, Denison,
Texas.
10. “The Necessity of Enacting
a State Law to Prevent the Intro
duction and Spread of Fruit Tree
Insects,” by Prof. P. H. Rolf, of
the Florida Experiment Station,
and Prof. Wm. B, Atwood, of tbe
