A western college professor Ijhs
achieved notoriety bv calling
President McKinley a knave aiol
Colonel Bryan an ass in a public
speech.
Since Cogh'.an's song in New
York, and the letter of Admiral
Kant/, from Samoa, some one lias
suggested that a'chair of silence

Colquitt county's misdemeanor

"i tbe Augusta Chronicle says:
What the solution cf the race ^
problem in the South shall he, will ^ {
only he determined through years
ot patient and persevering study,
but w.r are glad to see that all
over this land there is coming' to
he recognition ol the fact that the
enfranchisement of the negro,
before he was ready for the intel
ligent use of the ballot was a co
lossal political blunder, and that
the white people of the south
have been thrust by force of arms
into relations for which they are
not responsible, and ate surround
ed by conditions which tl.ey are
meeting' as bravely and earnestly
as could any people under the sun.
It, behooves white men every where
to deal with this subject in the
sober spirit which it merits, and
not to he led into silly sectional
abuse or political bitterness.
BEATS the record.
The Springfield (Mass ) Repub
lic in says:
A new claimant fertile title of
the fastest thing on earth is in
daily ‘‘training” between Boston
and Springfield along the gleam
ing rails of the Boston aod Al
bany rairoad. It is a mighty
locomotive, numbered 221, beside
whose proportions the famous 000
of the Empire State Express sinks
into comparative insignificance.
Its like was never before creat
ed. Whether it will be duplica
ted in tbe future depends on how
well it fulfills the builders predic
tion of a sustained speed of nine
ty miles an hour with a heavy
train over ordinary roadbeds,
grade- and curves Thus far it
has “done” seventy miles an hour
with such ridiculous ease that, it
is expected to exceed the estimate
of a mile every forty seconds
rather than fall short, thereof.
Thirty five young men of Peo
ria, III., have formed a club and
pledge themselves to marry none
but widows.
There is some talk of the young
ladies of Peoria getting out an
injunction to stop these giddy
youths from ignoring their claim*.
Ttie Morning News relates tbit
Ex-Speaker Reed says he would
have resigned from the House
eighteen months ago but for fear
that his motives would be miscon
strued. Now, be wishes it dis
tinctly understood that, lie baH retur
ed from politics; that he is not a
candidate for the presidency, or
any other political office
Referring to a recent decision of
the federal courts the Houston
(Tex.) Post, savs:
Now that, a Federal judge has
decided that a bankrupt’s home
cannot lie taken from him, some
of our $50,000 domiciled bank
rupts in Texas can apply wiih
impunity for their clearance pa
pers.
That is a mortifying chapter in
our military history which las
been reluctantly written by the
Military Court, of Inquiry con
vened in New Yoik to investi
gate charges of cowardice brought
again-t the commanding officers
of the Seventy tiret New York
Kegi.neut, which was honored
with a post on the tiring front in
tho hot, battle of July 1 last, at
Sail Juan. To ho thus officially
branded as unworthy of recogni
tion as soldiers, and in find the
verdict approved by New York's
gallant soldier Governor, is igno
flood Thing for Gomez.
Havana, May 9 —Gen. Maximo
Gomez is trying tu persuade Gov.
Gen Brooke that a Cuban stand
ing anuv of 15,011*1 men is a nec-
es-ary adjunct to the [.roper gov
ernment of the island. His views,
he has presented in writing, but
without eliciting as yet any reply.
the proposition is not. likely to
receive much consideration at
headquarters, where considerable
'surprise was occasioned by this
magnificent project, which, if
adopted. Gomez doubtless be
lieves, would be placed under his
piersonal control.
Commenting on the remark of
the Gazette that it would not vote
for Col. Stone for Governor be
cause he intended to abolish pov-
er'y, and therefore, do away with
the country newspaper, the Black-
shear Times says;
“Bui Col. Slone says he will
penitentiary every man who fails
to vote for e ini and will grant no
pardons; so where will the Gazette
appear in that day?”
The penitentiary has no fears
for us; we have been in (lie news-
paper business twenty years.
Welcome: s vest day of rest.
The Columbus (Ga.) Enquirer-
S in referring to tbe rising of tlie
people against tbe trusts says:
"There are signs that an al
most general war is to lie waged
against tlie 'rusts and combina
tions organ zed in reitraint of
trade and to kill competition.
The fight is going on in a num
ber of stales and the present indi
cations are that the next Dem-
