A TWENTIETH CENTURY WONDER Not since Morse flashed the first message by electricity from Washington to Baltimore in 1844, or whea the world was thrilled by the announcement that a message had been sent beneath the sea trom America to England, has the, wonders of that etrange, subtle, impalpable substance known as electricity, been so. strikingly illustrated as it w^s on last Satur day, wheu Marconi, cbe Italian wizzard, stood- on. tie shores of the new world, and- fell tjie pulsations of aD electric current sent through the air across the broad Atlantic. Wonders, beyond the dream of scientists, have been wrought by electricity, but this last, and perhaps uot yet, crown ing, foat, of this mysterious sub stance, has startled the world and opened up a field of speculation which has no limit. The 19th ceutury marked stu pendous strides io electrical de velopments, but the first year of the 20th century has eclipsed them all in this, last and most wonderful feat. A dispatch, dated, December 14lh, from St. Johns, New Pound- laud, eay: “Signor Marcoui announced the most wonderful scientific achieve ment of modern times tonight, in stating that be had received elec trie signals across the, Atlantic ocean from his station ip Cornwall, England. Signor Marconi arrived here a week ago Friday, selected Signal Hill, at toe entrance to the har bor, as ao experimenting station and moved his equipment there. Last Monday he cabled to Poldbu station to begin sending signals A dispatch from Washington, say*: “The president has as tonished southern republicans by generally declining to follow their recommendations; in fact- no southern republican organization can claim to have bad its recom mendations carried out by the president, and,, if a good republi can‘is not proposed or discovered, the chief executive appoiote democrats from the south. He remained at the recorder at tached.to the receiving apparatus, and to bis profound satisfaction signals were received by him at intervals, according to the pro gram arranged previously with the operator at Poldbu. These signals consisted of repeating at intervals the letter “8," which in Marconi’s code is made by three dots or quick strokes.” XMAS ANNOUNCEMENT SffRfJO. S3L.O-A.T BEOS. We desire to re luce our stock greatly by Christmas to make room for other goods to arrive, theref >re we make you these two propositions: WHERE DEMOCRATS STAND ON EX PANSION. The Pbilppine tariff framed by the republicans aod now before the house has showed where the democrats stand, and the line of policy they will pursue. Repre sentative Richardeon, of Tennes see. leader of the house, bee filed a minority report,. io which be says: -The measure is but another stop in a well-marked line of im perialism. It is enacting a policy of pure colonialism and the worse form of that policy. We are op posed to our governmeut’a at tempting to hold the territories as colonies^and treating the iuhabi tants there as subjsots and impo sing upon them a government of force. This is the method of an empire instead of a republic. We oppose the whole policy of the majority in dealing with the Pbil ppine archipelago. We believe that instead of the effort they are making to set up and hold partner nent colonies there, we should long since have Inaugurated a policy assuring to the people, of those islands a stable government and their ultimate independence.” The report says the aecretary of war, made the tax laws for the Ptriiidpines, and is given more power than most kings.
