_ dred and twenty million dollars to
!B the South, and by holding cotton
»'• the farmers can get It.’—Governor
’g Hoke Smith, of Georgia.
"The Hon. Hoke Smith has Issued
” an appeal to the Georgia fanners to
hold their cotton for higher prices
0 » is disinterested of him, for of
course he has no cotton of Ills own.
q But in exercising this new guberna-
» torial function does he not discrim
inate? Is he doing anything for
a . the producers of tobacco and corn.
- • for the peach growers and hog
j raisers, for the butcher, the baker,
j the candlestick maker? If not, why
I not?”
The Sun is not well Informed on
i economic conditions ‘n the South.
. or it would not propound these silly
questions. The price of cotton af
fects every interest and well-nigh
t every individual in the South. When
s the farmer gets a good price for bfs
cotton, everybody In this section
prosperous and happy. Good times
, prevail; money circulates freely; the
banks are filled to .plethora; the
merchants have a busy season; “the
butcher, the baker and the candle
stick maker” and all the other
(raftsmen and tradesmen that may
be mentioned share In the general
prosperity.
And not only does Governor
Smith not discriminate against other
interests in the South when he ad
vocates a good price for cotton, but
if The,Sun will look at the ques- 1
*lon in a broad and national spirit,
it will find that he does not dis
criminate against the country at
large, or other sections of it. -tt *
was due to the cotton crop of the I
South and the good prices it brought
last year that the United States en
joyed a balance of trade with the
rest of the world. The South’s cot
ton crop last year yielded a thou
sand million dollars, more money,
we believe, than is invested in all
the mills in the United States, and
while it is very natural, of • course,
that the mills should desire to get
their raw material as cheaply as
possible, a pood price for the sta-.
pie benefits hundreds in this section'
at least, where cheap cotton benefits
one person.—Macon .News.

The Ma on Telegraph points nut
the fact that for a term which will
last about a year, and for which a
Governor will receive about five
thousand dollars, he will have to
expend ten to fifteen thousand to be
, elected Governor of this State,
j says, ‘ from fifteen to twenty-five
; thousand dollars to cover the legit!

| It can readily be seen therefore
that to be Governor a man will first
have to expend three times as much
as he hopes to fjet from a salary and
be prepared to lose that amount
entirely if he Is not elected. He
will have to be a rich man. The
