Atlanta. April 28.—Ail predic
tions to the contrary not withstand
in:, and in spite of extraordinary
heavy expense, the Metropolitan
j grand opera season was a financial
‘success again this year. It was
made so only by the fact that the
receipts exceeded the most sanguine
expectations and soared to $91,000,
which is $10,:>00 better than last
year.
It !« understood that $85,000, on
the basis the finances were ar
ranged between the Music Festival
Association and the opera com
pany. would scarcely have Jot (lie
opera company come out even, but
with $91,000, the company not only
paid all expenses, but actually made
money. This is taken to indicate
that there will be no difficulty In
getting the Metropolitan back
South again next year.
The season in Atlanta no.v stands
an excellent chance to be made a
part of the Metropolitan Opera
Company’s regular season perma
nently.

SENATOR HOKE SMITH IN
DEMAND AS A SPEAKER
Atlanta, April 28.—Because he
went to •church while in an intoxi
cated condition, Julius McBrayer,
!an 18-year-old Haralson county
| youth, a relative of the solicitor of
1 that district, was sentenced to a
112-month term on the chaingaug.
The circumstances of the case have
been brought to Governor Brown's
attention and he has commuted the
! boy’s sentence to present service and
'a fine of $100.
' There is a special statute in the
; Georgia laws particularly prohibit
ing any one from being drunk
i around a place of worship, and It
; was under this law that McBrayer
iwas convicted.
! Four older men, however, who
' wore convicted at the same time,
1 for the same ofTense, were let off
■ with fines of $50 each. It was de
clared in the appeal to Governor
‘Brown that the solicitor who proso-
jcuted McBrayer was especially ~e-
j vere on him because of the fact
i that he was a relative, and that he
did not wish the impression to pre
vail that he was showing undue
leniency to a kinsman.
McBrayer seems to have got it
from his family all around, as his
father gave him a severe flogging
before he turned him over to the
sheriff.

of the country.

North Carolina cities, aad other
points are among those where the
Georgia senator has been requested
to make speeches during the past
couple of weeks.
Senator Smith found it difficult to
decline an invitation last week to
speak at the approaching meeting
of the Southern Society in Wash

Young Troutman went there
