he says, is a dangerously large pro

30,000 HORSES NOW IN
MESOPOTAMIA ARE TO BE
KILLED BY BRITISH
London, July 27.—Horae lorera
throughout the country have been
shocked by Colonial Secretary Win
ston Churchill’s announcement in the
House of Commons that 30,000 army
horses in Mesoptamia are to be killed
because it is too expensive to bring
them home. \
It was explained that were near all
heavy draft horses for which there is
no local use, and that they had to be
fed on imported fodder. The nearest
possible markets are India or Egypt,
but the difficulties of cost and tram
portation thence are said to be pro
hibitive.
Shipping men say it costa 40 to 50
pounds to bring a horse from the East
to England , not counting horsemen *
wages.
The War Office view is that it is
better for the horses to be killed hu
manely and scientifically tnan to bo
left in the hands of natives who would
not care for them properly, and no
one would suggest turning them
adrift into the desert.

TRANSPORTATION SITUATION
IN RUSSIA PREVENTS THE
MOVEMENT OF PRODUCE
Warsaw, July 6.( By Mail.)—Rus
,-ia’s transportation difficulties,
cause of the general deterioation of
the railroads under the Bolshevik
regime, according to Moscow report.,
have brought about an odd situation.
While Southern Russia has a surplus
of corn and has been endeavoring to
export it to Italy, northern Russia has
been buying the same kind of grain
from foreign countries.
The railroad situation is said to be
particularly bad in central Russia and
only recently it was reported that the
service between Moscow and Kiev had
been reduced to an average of oi,
train a week lor freight and passen
gers.
Russia’s metal production is report
ed to have reached but two per cenu
of the prewar figures, the coal pro
duction about 20 per cent, and the oil
production 40 per cent.
