URGES JAIL SENTENCES FOR
ALL PROHIBITION VIOLATORS
Atlanta, Ga., June 8.—In a state
ment made by Fred D. Dismuke. fed
eral prohibition director for Georgia,
jail sentences for violators of the pro*
hibition laws were urged. Mr. Dis
muke said: “Drastic is already having
a telling effect upon violators of thv
law and jail and penitentiary sen
tences will go farther in crecking the
illicit traffic in liquor.”
LITTLE ATLANTA GIRL IS
INJURED BY MOTORCYCLF
Atlanta, Ga., June 8.—Kfforts of th«
police to locate an unidentified motor
cyclist who ran down and serioualy iu
jiired 5-year-old Edna Ware, of 63
West Ontario street, have not been
successful. The accident otcured In
front of the child’s home, when she
was attempting to cross the 6treet and
while attempting to dodge an automo
bile, was struck by the motorcycle.

PRiSON FARM NEXT MONDAY
Atlanta, Ga., June 8.—The cominis
slon of superior court judge# to inves
tigate conditions at the state prison
farm, appointed by Governor Hard
wick. will begin their probe Monday,
as was determined when four of the
members conferred with the Governor
and announced their method if proce
dure. !♦ waR announced that all meet
ings will be open to the public, and
all persons in poesesion of facts con
cerning conditions at the state farm
would be welcomed at witnesses,
list of witnesses has been furnished
the Governor and through him to the
special commission, which will be sub
poenaed.
TWO DETECTIVES JAILED
AND TWO OTHERS FINED
Atlanta. Ga.. June 8.—After ordering
two city detectives jailed for failing to
answer a subpeona and fining two
others for tardiness, Judge E. T. Shur-
ley, of Warrenton, presiding in the
criminal division of Fulton Superior
Court, declared that Recorder George
Johnson as being “Incompetent
and should be impeached,” when a de
fendant bound over by the recorder
under $100 bond failed to appear when
his case was called for trial. When
informed of Judge Shurley’s remarks,

Moultrie. f!a„ June 8.—The Lions
Club here Is agitating the question of
the city malinger form of government
for the city of Moultrie. No immedi
ate effort will be made to bring about
a change In the form of the manage
ment of the city’s affairs, the club ex
pecting to conduct an educational
campaign before trying to get any ac
tion taken on the proposal.
HIGHWAYS SERIOUSLY
INJURED BY RAINS
Moultrie, (ia„ .lime 8.—It will cost
Colquitt county several thousand dol
lars to repair the damage to the high
ways calmed by the recent heavy rains,
according to statements made by the
road superintendent. All of the main
roads have been re opnn-d to traffic,
but some of the lesser important high
ways are still impassable Insofar as
automobiles are concerned. No largo
bridges were swept away, tbe malt
damage being to fills and culverts.

TICK WILL CONTINUE
Moultrie, June S.—The fight on (lie
cattle tick in Colquitt, county will not
stop Oil July 2. despite the fact that
large numhber of cattle owners by a
resolution passed at a meeting here
put the authorities nit notice that they
would refuse to dip after that date, it
was understood here today. The
mlseloners, following the meeting of
the cattle owners, failed to Issue a
public statement, but It was learned
that majority of the members of the
hoard said that the action of the mast
meeting would not change their de
clslon to go forward with the campaign
until Colquitt was tick free.
It was stated that some thirty rate
would be released around July 1, Ini'.
Hint the reason this step would be
taken was that the districts served by
the vats had been free of ticks for
the required period of time. At the
same time It was announced that oth
er vats would be released from time
to time and that the quarantine should
be lifted from the entire county by the
end of the year.
ALBANY HAS A’ "GHOST”
AT OLD COUNTY JAIL
Albany, Ga.. June .8.—Many Alban
ians have been disturbed by a
celled ••ghost” at tbe old county jail
building on Washington street which
Is now being used as a residence by
Pate and family. The “ghost,”
said to be the spirit of a negro hanged
there many years ago. not only car
ries on conversations, telling how the
rope Is still choking him, and answers
questions, but describes persons stand
ing In the darkness and replies to
statements uttered in whispers, and
fires pistol shots and flushes strange
lights on the wall, according to
Pate, and others who have visited the
place. Many have gone hoping to ex
pose the trick believed to be back of
the manifestations, but no one has sue-
ceeded so far.
UNITED STATES COURT TO
CONVENE IN ALBANY, JUNE 19
Albany, Ga.. June 8.—United States
District Court for the Albany division
will convene here Monday week. June
19, and Judge W. B Shepperd, of Pen
sacola, Fla., judge of the northern dis
trict or Florida, will preside. Both
criminal and civil cases will be tried,
the session lasting about a week- No
grand jury was summoned at the ad
journed session of the December term
held here In February, and no indict
ments were therefore brought over
from the June term. Judge Shepperd
has presided In Albany before and is
popular With the local bar and liti
gant*.

SOVIET PRISONS TO BE PROBED

cent, horizontal reduction tn intra
state freight rates for Georgia, which
goes Into effect July 1. The order was
passed that Georgia freight rates
might be In accord with Interestate
rates, which will be similarly redaoed
by an order at the Interstate Com-
meree Commission.
