Macon. Ga., June 9 —A fee bill pre
sented to the Bibb county commission
ers by J. D Crump, county tax collec
tor, totalling in round number*, >13,
>00. has stirred up somewhat of a hor
net's nest in Bibb county, and mem
bers of the Bibb County Board of
ucation are understood to be preparing
to take action to bring about the
abolishment of the fee system is this
county.
Under a law parsed in 1916, a coun
ty tax collector la allowed a fee of 1%
per cent, on the county schol fund
paid by him to the county board of
education No claim for the fee has
been made previous to this year, be
cause, it is said, the tax collector has
been "sleeping on bis right*."
Members of the Board of County
Commissioners were taken by surprise
when the bill for $13,000 was present
ed to them, they not being aware of
the law giving the collector the fee.
The bill has been referred to the coun
ty attorney for Investigation,
A movement for the abolishment of
the fee system in Bibb county has
been under way for several years and
recently members of the county Board
of Education declared If county offi
cials were placed on a salary basis,
the county could build a new grammar
school each year and provide a new
high school on the excess the officials
now receiving in fees.
