OUR GRADUATE NURSES
The announcement of the gradua
tion of nurses from the City Hospital
of Thomasville will he known with
cordial interest here, where the in
stitution has for a number of years
been one of great usefulness and ser
vice It has been only within the past

grown to such magnitude that a regu

LENINE AND TROTSKY
The partnership between Lenlne and
Trotsky to keep Russia in shackles,
economically and otherwise for many
years, serins a most peculiar and un
usual thing. Lenine is a man of
dreams, one whose sincerity of pur
pose is not questioned, but who has
miserably failed in interpreting the
trend of the time and the relation
ships that must exist between nations
before unrest and misrule shall cease.
Trotsky is called an opportunist,
who jumps when it is time to jump
in the right direction. He is merciless
in his ideas and has never yet ceased
to use t^ie sword when he thought it
necessary, and to abate its use when
it would personally help him keep his
position. Lenin*- has been recently
out of his mind, perhaps with the
strain under which he has labored,
and Jiis illness went to the extent that
he was fir^t reported insane and then
dead.
Late despatches from s.-mi-authori
tative sources indicate that he is on
a vacation for six months The real
character of his health has not been
divulged, except to the extent that it
preclude* his immediate participation
in affairs of state- Meanwhile Mr.
Trotsky has been temporarily shelved
in the affairs of state to the extent
that a triumvirate will rule the coun
try in place of Lenine. whil* he is
Trotsky may have seen the hand
writing on the wall and will make an
effort to eradicate the festering sores,;
which keeps Russia from the table
with honorable nations If he does
and his power is converted to const'me-
five methods, even with unworthy and
mercenary motives, Russia may yet
emerge from Its gloom and despair
d meet the world on a fair and
uure basis that will admit of recog
nition and commercial interchange.
SEE AMERICA FIRST
Seeing America first is a slogan
that is being practiced with regularity
by travelers of this day and rime.
There are still a large number of men
and worn* n, who are making their wav
across tin* Atlantic ocean to view the
ruins of Kurope and to indulge in
some of the pleasures that may be
found. Still the majority of men are
going to view the great West.
It is quite noticeable that th*- Pacific
Coast is to entertain a number of con
ventions this year which includes that’
of the Rotary International at Los
Angeles, the Shrine at San Francisco,
tlie General Conference of the Protest
ant Kplscopal church at Portland, the
Kiwanians. and other bodies, whose
membership consists of prominent
and useful citizens.
These men and their wives are mak
ing the trip to the Pacific Coast and
seeing America first. It Is a very Im
portant thing for the West that this
kind of people are going, for they
1 otm the backbone of the country’s
manhood and represent organizations,
whose membership is not excelled In
any marked degree throughout the na
tion. They wHI all be treated to a
view of our own wonders and their
visit will mean a yearning by many,
who have not had that privilege, to
take advantage of it whenever an op*
portunity present* itaelf.
HUMANITARIANISM.
With all the bad news coming from
tlie State Prison Farm, the neglect,
cruelty and barbarity, there is one
silver cloud to be thankful for. The
great heart of the peoples, as it always
does in such cases, go^s out to the
helpless and the oppressed.
During an investigation of the old
convict lease system, as the experien
ces of each victim were described
public sympathy became more aroused
and took a more tangible shape- To
ward the end of the investigation
sympathy had reached such an extent
that the governor could hardly have
used the pardoning power to an extent
which would not have been approved
by the public.
A like sympathy is now being shown
toward those confined at the state
farm at Milledgeville- It is encourag
lug to see such sympathy even if i
is directed in behalf of those convicted
of crime. And what would we
how aroused we get because of the
mistreatment of convicts we should
lie very indulgent at the conduct
even at the excesses and exaggeration
of the Abolutionists. When we see
the manifestations of human sympathy
for criminals in distress we will under
stand what a powerful influence
evidence of injustice toward slaves,
who had committed no crime, had up
on sympathetic and emotional peo

WARMING UP ENGLAND
English weather sharps want to
know if the sea going railroad down
he Florida coast to Key West has
-utised British summers to be warm-
-r. Some of them think it has be-
•ause the railroad pushed the Gulf
Stream a little more easterly and sent
its warm waters from their old track
around the north of Ireland and Scot
land into a new track through the
English Channel and south of Ireland
What’s to be done in a case like that?
Think of building a railroad and by so
doing changing the climate of a whole
oitntrv three or Tour thousand miles
way! It will be recalled that not
many years ago somebody suggested
titling a channel through the North
Carolina proturberanee and sending
the Gulf Stream in a northerly direc
tion so that Labrador could be made
to grow bananas. What (would Eng
land think of that? And would the
British Isles become so very cold be
cause of the change that it would be
almost unhabitable? In a long war
with England—granting that such
conflict could be possible—would the
American army’s best bet be a shift
of the Gulf Stream? Would an army
of 4.0(10.000 men be set at work cut
ting a hole through North Carolina?
Would the cutting of that canal he
more effective in bringing England to
terms than a thousand submarines?
Maybe all of this is chimerical—hut
it does ’no harm to exercise the
imagination a hit.—Savannah New;
