Washington. D. C.. June 16—The
Navy Department plan to create a
civilian naval reserve force, similar
.to the national guard; was adopted
yesterday by the Senate In accepting
an amendment of the appropriations
committee increasing the House pro

the work. Under the plan of the de

The naval reserve plan was adopted
during Initial consideration of the
4194.000,000 naval budget. Major con-
'tests went over until today, Senator

make an effort to reduce tbe navy per.

Last night the largest congregation
so far, of the Baptist meeting,
sembled. The auditorium was full.
The singing was the best yet—by
choirs and congregation, and in addi
tion the Baraca Quartette sang to the
delight of all. The Sunshine Choir,
composed of between seventy-five and
a hundred girls and boys, sang like
birds. They , add a great deal to tbe
music of the meettugs.
Dr. Anderson's text was 2 Kings
4:26: "Is it well with thee? Is It well
with thy husband? Is It well with
thy child?"
It as a practical and searching mes
sage. There were two additions to
the church. I*!
A -splendid congregation gathered
this morning. Mr. Rowland's solo,
"Is It Not Wonderful?" reached the
heart.
Dr. Anderson’s theme, previously
announced, was: “Every Day Relig
ion. The text was 1 Cor. 10:31:
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink
or whatsoever ye do, do all to the
glory of God." •
He spoke of three classes: The re
vival meeting Christians, the Sunday
saints, and the every-day Christians.
The (IrBt class Is composed of those
who are faithful in revival meeting-
being active In it and present at every
service, but who disappear when R Is
over and are Been no more, or nearly
so, until the next “big meeting."
The second cldss Is made up of
those who are faithful ou Sunday and
Into all sorts of devilment “as a rough
preacher would say,” all the rest of
the week.
The third class Is composed of those
who take Jesus Christ into their busi
ness and their religion Into every
nook and corner of their lives. 1
The testimony of a roan of this
kind led to the cenverslon of John
Wannumaker.
The sermon was listened to with
evident interest and unwavering at
tention.
Services this evening at 8:15.
No service tomorrow (Saturday)
In the morning, but services as usual
at 8:16 tomorrow night.
The meetings continue through the
coming week.
Washington, D. C-, June 16-—Agree
ment with representatives of tbe Na
tional Coal Association and the Na
tional Retail Coal Merchants Associa
tion upon a plan for preventing ad.
vance of bituminous coal prices during
tbe strike was announced last night
by Secretary Hoover after a confer
ence of the Commerce Department.
Anthracite coal operators, Mr. Hoov.
er stated, have agreed not to advance
prices of stocks now held above
ground, above the levels of the past
week, which, he added, were lower
than at the beginning of the strike.
Bituminous operators in the fields
where a price basis has not yet been
established, Mr. Hoover said, will be
"earnestly requested" to reduce selling
expenses for spot coal to the Garfield
price, including the standard selling
expense, plus such additions for In
creased costs as were justified In each
individual case.
The complexity of local conditions,''
be said, “due to the strike and the en
trance of many 'snow-bird' mines,
makes the establishment of maximum
prices very difficult In many districts.
This plan, If adhered to, should result
In a reduction of prices in several dig
tricts of Pennsylvania and West Ken
tucky. I have some assurances that
this basis will be accepted for Penn
sylvania and 1 hope that West Ken
tucky will also fall Into line."
Persistent misstatement or misun
derstandlng of elements inside and
outside tbe coal industry, Mr. Hoover
asserted, has given rise to the impres
sion in some quarters that the maxi
mum of $3-50 a ton for spot coal es
tablished with operators of 80 per cent,
of the producing Melds constituted
maximum prices and offered oppor
tunity -for occasional advantage being
taken.
There have been a few violations of
the spirit of this agreement. In Vlr-
glna, West Vtrglbla, Eastern Ken-
tuck and Tennessee, he said, where
prices for spot coal average about
a ton, varying from $2.50 to $3.25 with
an occasional sale of the maximum.
More than half the tonnage, he added,
is moving as contract coal, at averages
below $2.25, while Alabama coal Is
ing offered at from $1.82 to $2.10.
present, he declared, there Is a sur
plus of unsold coal at Virginia tide
water add in Alabama which it would
be of advantage to -large consumers
.to obtain as public demands will en-
Jarge later in the season
Permanent settlement of the coal
strike, Mr. Hoover said yesterday, dis
cussing the mine controversy, will
rest upon some solution of the prob

GHOST TELLS YOUNG
MAN TO GO TO HELL
Raleigh, N. C.—Persons living
neaa Forestville, Wake county, four
teen miles north of Raleigh, are con
siderably aroused by a ghost whr
makes nightly visits and tells hir
troubles at the home of W. H. Haley
a well-konwn farmer of that section
according to a story published in the
Raleigh News and Observer to-day.
Mr. Hnley declared the spirit has
called at his home every night for the
past five month and that he revealed
himself as a man who died in that vl-
cinity.fourtcen years ago. More than
a score of other persons have tailed
with the ghost, the newspaper asserts.
Air. Haley declares the ghost first
visited his home on tfte night of Jan
uary 14th, when he and the other
members of his family were awakened
by vigorous knocking at the front
door. He got up and went to the door
but no'one was there. For several
nights, thereafter, he derlares, he wai
aroused by th’s strange rapping. De
termined tb catch the intruder Air.
Haley secreted tymself in the year
and it was there, he declares, that a
voice spoke to him. He looked in ev-
cry direction, but could sec nothing
that look -d like a man. The voice fol
lowed him into the house and sine,
has been a regular caller.
Several nights ago. Air. Jgaiey says,
Willie Fort was invited by the voles
to visit his grave in the Forestville
cemetery. A number of men of the
neighborhood are said to have gone to
the burying grounds in place of Young
Fort and the ghost failed to show up.
One of the party went to the Haley
house and demanded with an oath to
speak with the ghost. Deaf to the
pleading of Mr. Haley not to speak
thusly of the voice the young man en
tered the house. , The voice came and
the question was asked if he would
speak to the young man. The ghost
replied very distinctly: "Tell him tp
go to h_" Mr. Haley declares. Hir
statement was corroborated by mem
bers of the family and by others from
the community who declare they
heard it.
