WELCOME, NUT GROWERS
The National Nut Growers coaren-
tlon started today In Thomasrille and
will continue through the fifth of
October. A very Interesting program
has been prepared and will be carried
through in the effective manner, which
characteristic of this organisation.
TbomasviUe has entertained these
fellows before. In fact we are old and
fast friends and it is with sincere
pleasure that we greet them again.
Not only do we realise their innate
1 and sincerity of purpose hut we
learned to appreciate the great
good that these conferences do in
moulding sentiment and creating a
proper knowledge of the difficulties
problems that beset the pecan

able that we have. It is that

handicaps that must be met and fought
along scientific lines. If pecan
i had no diseases and bore uni
formly year by year there would be no
use for a convention of this kind ex
cept to plan for making the market
profitable.
As it is there are many diseases and
many off years. Science Is the only
way they can be successfully combat-
ceived. The fans as usual t

Fire Prevention Week. What a
bore thinks one fellow. What non
sense and bunk, aaya another. What
la the good of any such things, says
and so on down the line,
rid about it and then .often
forget It until they are awakened to
find their homes or business houses
flames. Then they realise that
there is nothing that can do more ma
terial damage to their earthly posses
sions than fire. It is too late then.
Over a million dollars worth of
property is destroyed every day of the
| year. Over hflff of it comes from
I carelessness on the part of property
owners. The innocent sufferers from
others’ carelessness are legion and
they have no recourse.
These are facts that cannot be dis
puted. They bring a most serious In
dictment against our people and
against our fire regulations. There is
no more excuse permitting a man to
have a fire hazard in his place than it'
is to allow him to go abroad with a
contagious disease. The fire will de
stroy anything in its path and it usual
ly follows carelessness and dirty
premises.
Thomasville is just as guilty in this
respect as many other towns. We
have ceen two fires start within sight
of our office that might have destroy
ed a hundred thousand dollars worth
of property. They were both prevent
ed from spreading beyond the lmmedl-

I caretaker or Janitor,
j These are but two Instances that we
witnessed. There are others that are
• not known. They are entirely too fre-
'quent find they cause entirely too
much loss. The fire records of Thom-
^aavlile are remarkable but they ought
Thomasville Tiraes-Enterprise to be more so, for one-third of the
»ns the fact that a Coast Line fires can be traced to defectiveness or
was twenty minutes late as a carelessness. One Is the fault of the
thing. This:reminds us that city authorities and the other of the

notables, such as Kudyard tvipnng,
George du Maurier, Gelett Burgess
and Carolyn Wells, have tried their
hands at penning it. It is said that
the composition of limericks origi
nated as a form of amusement mhen
a crowd of people gathered together
for a pleasant evening in the Irish
town. Each person was supposed to
compose a stanza in turn, and the
following chorus was sung after
each new rhyme in order to give the
next contributer time to get his
limerick ready:
“Oh, won’t you come up, come up,

Limerick?
Oh, won’t you come, come all the

Come all the way up to Limerick?”
“The town which occupies both
sides of the river as well as King’s

the island at the present time.

Many vital problems are unsettled.
Many pertinent issues are either

WATSON’S APPROVED EPITAPH
Some years ago one of the New
York editors, we believe Joseph Pulit-
ser, whom Tom Watson hss described
as tbe greatest editor of all time, said
In discussing Mr. Watson: “No plow
band ever speaks III of him. no mil
lionaire ever speaks well of him.”

comment in his Georgia publication

The bells of Limerick are famous for
their beautiful tone. The story runs
that- they were made many years
Italy by a young bellmaker,
who after years of .toil perfected a
aet of bells the purity of whose
tone satisfied his critical ear. j
They were hung in a nearby
vent, but during a war the bells
were carried away and no one knew
of their whereabouts.
“Misfortune fell upon the bell,
maker and he wandered far from
home always with the hope that he 1
would find his beloved bells again.]
Hearing that they had been taken'
to Limerick, he set out for the city.
While sitting on the dock of the
eel as it made (to way up the River
Shannon , he beard the sweet, pure
tones of hia bells once again. He
fixed his eyes on the distant cathe
dral whence the music came,
when they came to tell him that he
might enter the city, he was dead.
