the story of the contest In a special

Dally Express, wished to acquire the
greatest prize in the newspaper
world. Lord Rothermere, one of the
richest men in the British empire, ac
tively sought to secure the Nortn-
cllffe Interest. Walter got back In the
running by purchasing Ellerman's
180.000 shares.
Walter, however, was In no finan

And here the managing director and
the general manager of the Times
stepped In. They w«*re anxious for
Walter to acquire control, believing
that only In that way could tbe for

Times be restored to It. Through
them, Walter was able to enlist the
financial backing of Astor.
Finally the question of the Wialtei
option came before tha court, which
held that the administrator ot the es-
must get the best offer ha could
the Times but that Walter must
have the opportunity of meeting anr
bid. Rothermere waa directed to put
his offer (a writing. He bid 1450,000
pounds. 100,000 pounds more than
had been expected of him. However,

passed to Its present owner.
From a commercial point of view
the price paid Is considered exceed
ingly high, but It Is said Rothermere
would have gone to a million and a
half pounds If he had had another op
