The people of Frederick, Maryland, have given those Southernors who like to complain a lot to talk about. They have erected a monument to the memory of Barbara Fritchic, the heroine in Whittier’s poem in which he described a dutch girl defiantly waiving a Union Flag before Con federate soldiers, marching through Frederick. The late Captain Slade, represen- re in the Georgia General Assembly from 1907-1911 from Muscogee coun- told the writer that he was in com ind of a company of Confederates, marching through Frederick, when a girl performed just such a stunt as Whittier ascribed to Barbara Fritchie. Captain Slade said the attitude of the girl and the soldiers was so good natured that even if the poet heard of it he would not have pretended that his poem described the event. However, there was a young woman in Frederick at the time by the name of Barbara Fritchie who posessed just the disposition to qualify as Whittier’s heroine. What more natu ral than that the poet’s fancy should have been too litterally construed? And what difference does it make? Why not destroy the statues to the Goddei Thomasville, who would raise their hands In holy horror If the Red Cra« refused to go to the relief ot distress because It didn’t have funds.
