Washington, D. C., Not. 21.—Geor

Felton, first woman senator,
star member of the cast In the open
ing scene yesterday of the convening
of Congress.
Her effort to be sworn In and sit
r a day was forced over until today,
it In dll other respects she enjoyed a
thrilling debut as the congressional
:urtain was raised.
And there was good prospect last
night that success would crown her
hope of taking the oath today and
becoming the flrse woman senator
fact as well as name, if only for
day.
The 87-year-old woman, a breath of
"lavendar and lace from the old South"
yesterday was all but an actual sena
tor, occupying a seat on the Senate
floor for hours, where she was cheered
by the gallery crowds and was the ob
ject of congratulation by senators,
representatives and officials who
thronged about her in Informal recep
tions. She was feted also by crowds
and about the Senate and was photo
graphed and dined. Tired, but happy
last night, she was prepared to renew

Of all senators, psst, present or fu
ture, Mrs. Felton was the first to ap
pear yesterday on the floor. Accom
panied by former Senator Hoke Smith
of Georgia, and wearing a black bon
net, fur coat and white gloves, she ar
rived more than an hour before the
noon convening hour. Soon she was
"st home," hanging up her bonnet and
coat In the Democratic cloak room.
Shaking out her silk dresa and lace
collar, she was given an absent sen
ator's chair alongside Senator Harris,
Democrat, Georgia, and was the cyno
sure of all eyes and the loadstone of
arriving sonators, who hastened to
shake her hand and offer best wishes.
Gallery crowds, largely composed of
women, overflowing into the halls,
cheered and applauded the white-hair
ed woman as, shortly before the Sen-
med, she was escorted to an
ante-room to receive a huge bouquet
of eighty-seven roses. Again the crowd !
broke into a noisy demonstration as
abe returned to her seat, where she re
