NEAR EAST CROPS
BURNED BY TURKS
Two farms of the Near East Re-
lief, where many refugees had been
collected and thought safe,
burned and crops destroyed. These
farms were situated between Com
stantinople and the Dardenelles, and
had become a source or revenue.
This is but a forerunner of what
can be expected in Eastern Thrace.
These farms were part of n great
agricultural scheme on the part of
the Near East Relief, whereby th*
people could not only be seifsustain-
ing, but help at other points.
It is readily seen much more work
will fail upon the Near East Relief
and the carrying on of same seems
almost insurmountable,
way will be revealed and may lives
saved. An unselfish work such
the Near East Relief will eventually
have an influence even on the Turk.
The Near East Relief will carry oi
and every dollar contributed by the
people of America will find its ulti-
end in the feeding, housing and
practical education of these un
fortunate children.
Charles V. Vickery, general
tary of the Near East Relief, today
denied that his organixation had
abandoned Constantinople as a base
>f supplies and as a n orphanage
centre. Such a step was indicated
in press dispatches earlier in the day.
"We are in constant communica
tion with Constantinople by cable,"
Mr. Vickery said. "Though tentative
plans have drawn up for the trans
fer of workers, children and supplies
the event that the situation de
mands it, these plans are of a pnrely
precautionary nature.
"The only workers who have left
Constantinople for Greece are three
experts sent to look over the ground
in case it becomes necessary to put
these plans into effect.
“The only orphans moved from the
city have been four hundred from
orpharages which we were obliged te
close on the Asiatic side of th«
Bosphorus. Wo have still approxi
mately ten thousand more in the city
who will remain here unless condi
tions force their removal, The seven
ty-five hundred additional youngsters
reported on their way to Greece
fram Samsoun and other points in
the interior of Asia Minor.
"The warehouses where o
plies are stored lie directly
Bosphorus. Their contents can w
moved by steamer to whatever desti
nation circumstances may require in
few hours. Near East Relief has
boats chartered if evacuation •»
orphans and workers should become
necessary but our people will not
leave the city as long as it is possible
for them to remain there."
