N. J STANDARD OIL
NOT IN ANY GROUP
ASSERTS OFFICIAL
Washington, Dec. 15.—The Standard
Oil Company of New Jersey, constru
ing the Supreme Court's dissolution
decree by which it was cut oft from
its former corporate holdings as a final
expression of the public will on a
olistic control, "has conducted Its bus
iness'' under conditions of free and
active competition. W. C. Teagle. pres
ident of the company, declared in
statement prepared for submission to
the Senate manufacturers* committee
yesterday on resumption of Its Investi
gation of the oil industry.
Going Into conditions which have
arlssn In the Industry since the dis
solution decree, with particular rela
tion to the New Jersey company, Mr.
Teagla declared his company had ob
served the decree “In good faith both
in letter and spirit,” adding:
“J want to say with all emphasis
that th£ Standard Oil Company of Nei
Jersey Is not ^ “F combina

products."
Mr. Teagle said he wanted to "pro
test against the characterisation ot
this company as oae of the Standard
Oil group,’’ as If the old association
of Standard Oil companies existed to
day, or as if thl scompany constituted
part of any group of companies sab
ct to common control.

that the “strategic location" In respect

general competition among the rep
arated units."
Geographical considerations, he ssld,
’limited the extent" to which tho New
Jersey company may compete with Its
former subsidiaries. The competition
open to this company, with Its former
subsidiaries, Mr. Teagle said, was
limited by the factor ot transportation
three companies—the Stsndard Oil
Company of New York, the Atlantic
Refining Company, and tho Stai.dard
Oil Company of Kentucky.

ucts Mr. Teagle gave It as nls opinion
that the dominant factor in the domes
tic marketing situation, was shipments
of refiners in the mid-continent pro
ducing field—Oklahoma, Kansas and
Texas. This production, he said,
stituted an enormous floating supply,
which was not tied to any market but
waa shipped to territories where Ioval
prices would yield the best returns. It
was this competition, he added, with
which every one engaged In market

HOW COLUMBIA RECORDS
ARE MADE FOR THE PUBLIC
One of the strangest and least
known task is to taste vocations is
that of the tea-taster, whose task is
ite shipment of tea imported
the United States, to determine theit
quality and value for purposes of fix
ing duty charges. His sense of taste
perfectly developed that he
determine not only the kind of tea
under test, but also the geographical
location where it was grown.
‘The tea-taster's sense of taste is
almost as highly developed as the
tone sense of the tone-tester in the
factory of the Columbia Graphopbone
Company, “according to Moore
Music Co., local Columbia Dealer.
“The tone-tester gives final inspec
tion to all reproducers leaving the
factory. His tone sense is to sharply
developed that he can detect Instant
ly the slightest deviation from pure
tones as fixed by the most exacting
standards.
“He sits in a sound-proof room,
furnished with only a bench and a
Grafonola with two tone-arms. A
standard reproducer that has been
pronounced perfect is one arm, and
the reproducers to be tested are at- {
tachcd one by one to the other arm. j
They are sounded alternately on a
record, which reproduces a single
of perfect pitch. If the tone
of the reproducer corresponds abso-
lutely with that of the testing repro
ducer, it ia approved and ultimately
reaches the home of the music lover, i
The smallest variation in tone results
in its rejection.
“The tone-tester hears only one
note—middle 0._all day. He 1s
bo expert in detecting discrepancy in :
tone that no means has yet been '
developed to improve upon this.
method. In this way a uniform [
standard of excellence in Columbia
reproducers la maintained.
