ALMOST FORGOTTEN
LANGUAGE RESTORED
. Charlottesville, Va., Dec. 18.—
Restoration of an almost forgotten
language with the aid of an unedu-
cated, nearly illiterate, self-taught,
full-blooded Indian from the High
land of Guatemala, haa been
complished by Dr. Wiliam Gates of
Charlottesville during the past
month. The Indian ia a “Quiche.”
and his language, which heretofore
never had been thoroughly studied,
bears the sunie name. The race and
tongue are offshoots of the ancient
Mayas, whose high civilization, the
advanced of any early Ameri-
people, flourished before the
Spanish arrived in South and Central
America.
The Mayns built marvelous cities
palaces and temples, the ruins of
'hich dot Yucatan and Guatemala.
Their descendants are the Indians
s peon class which inhabit that
region today. Only the mountain
i have escaped the advance of
civilzation.
Through the application of a new
scientific method which reaches to the
root of language Dr. Gates expects
to restore the decadent tongue de
cipher the hitherto unravelled secrets
of the ancient Maya Hieroglyphic
writings and inscriptions which have
baffled archeologists for centuries,
compile books for the instruction of
the Indians, and eventually
the literature.
In his experiments the scientist has
been recording on a smoked paper
cylinder the vibrations of a stylus
actuated by the Indian’s words spoken
Into a mouthpiece. These records
preserved for study of the intricate
variations of pronunciations and al
ready, working with manuscripts
written in the Indian tongues by the
earliest Spanish missionaries, Dr.
Gates has found a remarkable preset*
vation of the ancient speech. The in
strument he used is known as tha
“kymagraph” or wave-writer, and
was invented by an eminent French
ethnologist of the Smithsonian
Institution, who has studied practical
ly all North American Indian langu-
25. He lives in the almost inacces
sible mountains of Central America
and is of tho purest blood descended
front' the Maya empire builders.
Dr. Gates, who is director general
of the National Museum of Guatemala
has been studying the Maya inscrip
tions and ruins for more than twenty
years. As a result of hia present
studies, he expects shortly to be able
to translate the entire writing sys
tem and reveal the knowledge and at
tainments of the Maya civilization.
Already, several of the cabalistie
symbols have been read, and it ia ex
plained that an announcement con
cerning the deciphering of great
importance to ethnologists . and
archeologists will shortly bo made.
The final success of his extended
investigation, Dr. Gates said, was
due not only to the use of the
kymagraph in his research, but to
study of the grammar of the present
tongues and application of the rules
thus worked out to the writing found
in the inscriptions. The tongues of
the several tribes show syntax that,
differs widely from those of othet
languages. He familiarity with these
rules and vagaries enabled him to
place symbols in their proper
lationship and finally to read, in part
several of the symbols.
Dr. Gates’ studies have been direct
ed with the view not only of decipher
ing the Mayan writing, but of mak-
ing the ruins of his empire as familiar
to laymen as well as scientists,
ancient Egypt In fact, he declared
not only are the ruin-studded Yucatan
peninsula and Guatemala the “Egypt
of America,” but the Caribbean sea
is the American Mediterranean, and
his hope to open the country to
tourists.
Dr. Gates also will endeavor to aid
the progress of the Guatemalans and
their country, and to open the land
to development. In that connection
the Indian, Alvarado, has returned to
his people to introduce the ilmpla
primer Dr. Gatea ia preparing for the
education of the Indians.

ACTION CREATES A NEW

Washington. D. fc , Utt 19—The re

‘MinpqsoUt to ftkpond to a subpoena
re^uhing hfln to give under oath the
inforfi&tlon updn which he based lm-
tfe&bhment charges against Attorney
General Daugherty has created a
precedent of such possible far-reach-
importance that the House judic
iary committee decided yesterday to
the whole matter to a subcom
mittee for Investigation.
Meantime the hearings on the
larges against Mr. Daugherty will
go forward, the committee aummon-
ich witnesses as it can find with
out the aid of Mr. Keller, who dra
matically withdrew from the proceed-
last Thursday after filing with
Chairman Volstead a statement charg
ing that there had been a "barefaced"
attempt to “whitewash" the Attorney
•al. At that time the taking of
testimony on two of the fourteen
charges filed by Mr. Keller had been
completed.
Chairman Volstead plans to appoint
within a day or two the subcommittee.
In the language of a formal
motion adopted yesterday by the en-
jmmlttee. Is "to make an Investi
gation of what action, it any, should
ten in connection with the con
duct of Mr. Keller towards this coin-
ittee and towards the House of Rep-
■sentatives." •
The subcommittee will ibe composed
of both Reubllcans and Democrats,
Mr. Volstead said, and It was Indl-
that the personnel would de
pend largely upon the willingness of
ie members to serve.
Admittedly Mr. Keller’s announce
ment that In refusing to obey the sub
poena, he was standing on his rights
a member of the House, has left
majority of the twenty-one lawyers
i the Judiciary committee In a quan
dary as to Just what the power of
:ommIttee and the House Is in
the premises. The situation is with-
parallel In so far as they now can
determine and since whatever action
la decided upon will constitute a guide
In the future there Is a disposition to
attack the problem with great care
and deliberation.
The situation was canvassed fairly
and fully at an executive session yes
terday last more than an hour and
hair, but there wg such a diversity
of opinion that agreement upon a defi
nite line of action was regarded as
hopeless, at least, until a study of the
legal authorities had shed more light
than thus far has been brought
bear. From the start some members
have been in favor of a report for
ntempt proceedings before the bar
of the House, hut thus far they appear
i have been in the minority.
On the basis of the Information
at hand, the members are farily
vlnced that Mr. Keller cannot be made
appear before the committee to
testify. They alto are of the opinion
that the House Itself cannot enforce
compliance with the subpoena as
could a court In a similar
Whether there could be contempt pro
ceedings Is another question and om
for the subcommittee to inquire Into.

SERBIAN FAMILY QUARREL
NOW HAPPILY COMPOSED
Belgrade, Nov. 25.—(By Mail)_«
The quarrel between King Alexandei
and his elder brother, Prince George,
who renounced his claim to ths
throne of Serbia in 1909, has been
brought to an end by the action of j
Prince George in writing to the King j
that his actions were incorrect and :
offensive. The quarrel was started | t
in connection with the latter’s civil
list allowance. \
Prince George concluded his letter ‘
by entreating the King to forget the j
past, and he gave assurances thst in {
the future he would fulfill his obliga- !|
tions as a member of the royal family ;
and respect its statutes. The dispute, I'
which weighed heavily upon the ec
try, is now definitely closed.
