THE MEETING ON .SAT
URDAY.
The meeting on Saturday to resist
the tax levied by the Inferior Court
for Railroad purpsses, was attended,
ns near as we could judge, principally
by persons residing in the 17th Dis
tr.ct and on the Lunh border of the
County. They had seemingly been
well drilled before they came to the
meeting and their purpose fixed to re
sist tho tax without regard to proprie
ty or reason. The leaders deserve
credit for the completeness ol the or
ganization they conjured up, but we
are satisfied that they donot compose a
third of the voteis of the county. —
CTI. S. B. Spencer and Hon. James
L. Seward in do powerful arguments
in Denali* or me liailrrad and elo
quently appealed to tho intelligence,
patriotism and enterprise ot the mal
contents, but they had expected and
were pro; sired for this, and determined
to hear no voice of reason. A com
promise offered by Cel, Seward was
tumultuously voted down and great
noise and confusion att.est-.-d the satis
faction they enjoyed at finding them
selves largely in tho majority of those
in the- bouse They finally passed
resolutions which were oidered to bo
published and to which we must refer
those who desire to know the action
taken.
A subsciiplien was commenced to
raise money to fee a lawyer for the
purpose of testing the question before
the Courts, atxl a lew were very san
guine of success, although avvaie that
several similar suits within the know l
edge of this community resulted in
favor of the tax. The Chairman,
himself, we understand, having been a
party to one of these suits at one time,
and at another, the advocate of a St-ue

however, t > some of the persons who
participated in the meeting, and who
were instininentiil in raising opposi
tion to iho tax, we must state, that
their views were changed upon hear

’i'he limn -y they propose to expend
in resisting the tax will pay the taxes
of many of them, and give impetus to

distract, the harmony and enterprise of
the county. They forget 100, that the
money they raise is not all that must
he spent to no purpose —if they attack
the Inferior Court, the Inferior Court
will be obliged to defend itself, and
another lawyer must be feed to defend
the suit. The county treasury, there
foie, will have to hear tho burden,
and those gentlemen who are endeav

have to replenish the treasury they
emptied in a law suit. If now limy
