HOW They Were Carried Through Im
dia and 8otd to a Native Prince.
The sjory of the Servian jewels
must recall to the ex-Empress Eu
genie her own experiences when the
waves .first began to dash about her
throne. She determined to sell the
greater part of her jewels in hope td
do something to save the dynasty;
Publicity had to be avoided; and A
market was not to be found ift Eu
rope, newly thrilled by the horrors
of SedaiL The Empress looked to
the East for a market An English
man was on hls way home fora holi
day. A telegram at Bombay awaited
Jiim from one of the greatest Euro
pean financial houses and Informed
him of the determination of thb Em
press. The difficulty had been to find
a man with sufficient influence to be
able to approach the princes of In
dia in secret with a view to selling
\hem the Jewels. Not less hard was
It to la^ hands on the man who had
moral strength sufficient, to carry with
him surreptitiously hundreds of thou
sands of pounds* worth ol| Jewels In
lands where the Queen’s writ did not
run, and where the protection of the
constable is not immediately avail
able.
Every care had been taken to In

taken to pieces; the gems removed
from their settings; the latter

their bearer In a belt*6f soft leather.
The Englishman put on the belt,
armed himself with a trusty revolver,
engaged a trusty servant, and set
forth on his mission. For three months
he wandered over. road, rail and
river. The responsibility of his
trust, the constant danger of discov
ery, the difficulty of disposing of his
burden were worries that combined
almost to kill him. At last he was
successful.'The jewels were sold to
a prince who esteemed them the more
for that they were the property of a
distressed Empress. There would
have been trouble, no doubt, had the
matter been known at the India Office,
but the man who discharged the un
dertaking afforded an example of
courage and a solid worth In trying

“Eve’» Apple Tree.”
A fruit supposed to bear the nark
of Evo’a teeth is one of the many
botanical curiosities of Ceylon. The
tree on which it grows la known by
the slgnlffcant name of "the forbidden

bloeeom has a rery pleasant scent,
but the really remarkahle''feature of
the tree, the one to which It owes Its
name. Is the fruit. It Is beautiful, and
hanga from the tree In a peculiar man

crimson within, eaeh fruit hfs the ap

poisonous quality, led the Mahome
