The sadly-mixed conditions of land
litloa in Colqidtt county lias long been
a fruitful source of litigation. A case
of considerable local interest is now in
progress and the Savannah Press speaks
of it as follows:
“The parties litigant are Mrs. Jennie
L. Graves and others against. H. T.
Crawford, William McMullen, John
McMullen and John W. Hightower, and
tho land in dispute is situated in Col
quitt county.
At tho outset of the caso Mr. Marion
Erwin of Erwin & Callaway, proctors for
the complainants, announced that a
large number of rocords in tlm case were
strangely missing.
Mr. Onllawny in speaking for the
plaintiffs, ■ had some caustic tilings to
say. Hn said, among other tilings, that
down iu certain sections of tho most
beautiful portion of. Georgia, referring
to Colquitt county a state of practical
anarchy prevailed. Tho judiciary, ho
said, is frequently changed, new decis
ions made necessary and juatioe ham
pered by the fear of the witnesses to
testify the troth.
Mr. Callaway asserted that the chalD
of titles undor which the defendants
claimed tho land in disputo was a fraud
out of the whole cloth. Ho said that
every deed under whioli they claimod
for a period of 60 years, though purport
ing on tlioir face to be modo by many
different parties at times, extending all
the way through the poriod, were made
by oue person, ou one occasion, and that
the papers had then been mutilated in
order to give them tho appearance of
being old.
A died proporting to bo mado by Mr
Jool F. Graves, whom, he said, at oue
time was offered a professorship at Yale
University, contains the same had
spalling t lint existed in all of the other
deeds and muniments of title. Title
was spelled tital; number was spoiled
uomher; other was spelled outlier; nine
ty was spi lled niuty, otc. These things,
ho contended*, were unmistakable evi
dences of fraud. He then introdneed
tostimouy whioli he olaimed proved con-
closively that certain deeds were rank
est forgeries.
