BIDDING FOR
SCHOOL HOUSE
Petitioners Want Loca
tion of New Building
Submitted to People.
A strong effort Is being made b>
an element of Influential citizens to
persuade the city school board to lo
cate the ne*v primary building on
the north side of the railroad. A
petition asking that the board submit
the question to the voters tit. the prim
ary on the 19th was prepared yester
day and will be circulated today.
Mr. E. M. Mallet to will make the
school board several propositions ad
ditional to the one he originally
made. One of these is that he will
contribute $500 toward the purchase
of the Barrate property, together
with the Miller lot immediately ad
joining it. It is understood that the
Barrate place is valued at $2,500 and
that the Miller lot Is held at $1,500.
It is claimed by the friends of this
plan that more money beside Mr. Mai
lete’s contribution could be raised to
ward carrying out their ideas
The proposition that Mr. Mallette
originally made to the board and
that was turned down by them, to
donate a large lot on the golf ground
addition, still stands, and it is un
derstood that hf will place in writ
ing before the board at least two
more propositions today for getting
the new bnilding placed on the north
side.
The Barrate house is in about the
same condition that it was in when
occupied two years ago by the prim
ary grades. Mr. Mallette will prob
ably make it a condition of his dona
tion that the present house be torn
down and a new building put up,
just as is contemplated for the
south Georgia campus.
The following is the petition that
baa been drawn up. It is general in
its terms and only asks that the
broad question be submitted to the
voters.
Petition to School Board of the City
of ThomnsviUc.
Wo, tho undersigned citizens of
Thomas county, hereby petition your
honorable hfdy to submit at the
ing primary the question as to wheth
er the school building for tho prim
ary grades shall bo built on the
north or south side of tho Atlantic
Coast Line railroad.

Liu-1 Morning Fire Comes Near Do*
Ing Serious Damage.
) /
At 2 o'clock Wednesday morning
tho flro boys were rudely awakened
from their slumbers by the alarm
They were already down stairs rig
ging up their horses when Policeman
Dawkins ran In tho front door and
told them that tho fire was on Jack-
son street at Tim Mitchell’s restaur
ant. By tho tlmo tho fire wagon tur
ned tho corner, tho blazo was bright
enough to enable tho driver to read
all the store signs up as far as Broad
street. It looked like a fight for the
neighborhood, bub In less time than
11 takes to write It, a good stout
stream of water was playing on tho
flames and tho stream was stout all
right, too. • Tim's store was about
ruined and some damage was done
to his next door neighbor, but tho
Davis livery stable and tho Clifton
carriage house, almost adjoining on
each side were safe.
Tho circumstances look very much
like Incendiarism. Policeman Daw
kins had passed up Jackson street
only a few minutes before and saw
no sign of trouble. Ho camo around
to Herring’s store a very short time
and on turning tho corner Into Jack-
son again, ho saw tho whole roof
of Tim’s place on fire. Tho blazo
did not start around tho flue, the
only place It could well have started
of Itself, but seems to have originat
ed tr^m the rear near the ground.
The shany belonged to Jim At
kinson. There was a small amount
of Insurance carried probably more
than can he realized by Mitchell.
