It is a well-known
scientific fact that in
order to produce the
verv greatest possible
yield from any soil it
must contain an actual
excess over and above
all demands that can
possibly be made on it
by the plants.
Many fanners will feed their
stock as much nourishing food
as they can possibly assimi
late, yet will starve their crops
on the mistaken notion that
they are"economizing” on fer

The economy in fertilizers

FIREMEN FIGHT
FIERCEFLAME
In Freezing Temperature
Home Of J. Bell Borns
In The Early Morning.
At tbe early hour of Ore thirty the
fire department was called to put out
the house occupied by Mr. J. W. Bell
on Clay street. The bouse la loca
ted just back of tbe West End place
near Broad street and Isa large frame
building two stories high and In very
good condition.
It la thought that tbe bouso caught
from a spark from the chimney as
the roof was in flames before discov
ered by the Inmates, who Immediate
ly upon seeing the blaze gave tile
alarm. The department responded
with a vim arriving on the scene a
very few minutes after the alarm.
They worked consistently for about
an hour and succeeded In checking
the flames before any damage was
done to the Inside of the house. The
roof was completely destroyed as was
the celling of the upper floor.
Tho department was without prop
er facilities for handling the Are or
there might have been even less dam
age. The ladders of the wagon are
not long enough to reach the top of
the building so the firemen were com
soiled to cut through the celling to
fight tho fire. They were drenched
with water and frozen stiff. That
north wind which started to blowing
early the evening before was n freez
er and when the men would come in
to contact with the air their clothes
would be a mass of icicles. The
transformation from the heat and
smoke of the burning building to the
Icy outside was severe on them but
was cheerfully borne by the men
from the department and several oat
elders who assisted them In the
work.
The building was Insured for 32,-
000 but as yet the amount of the
damage has not been determined. It
wss owned by Mlaa Cora and Anna
Hurst, and will be probably put In
repair as goon aa possible.

Tbe City Plant Now
First Class Con
dition.
A visit to the city light and wa
ter plant yesterday, showed that
everything about the plant waa in
apple pie order, and in first class
shape. Tboma8ril!e Is one munici
pality which has no reason to regret
that It has taken orer these proper
ties, both because they are being run
at a minimum expense, and because
they are being kept up to their max
imum efficiency.
The boiler room, which is usually
the dirtiest place about a plant Is
clean, and without trash of any de
scription. The engine room with its
many machines is In strikingly good
condition, and the waterworks plant
which has recently been moved from
its old location, is the most attractive
room on the premises. All of the
rooms have been treated to a new
coat cf whitewash. Mr. Epply by
dint of much expenditure of elbow
greas ?, has succeeded in getting rid
of th i most of the accumulation of
oil with which the old engine room
floor waa soaked. A tile floor has
been laid in tho water works plant,
which makes It very attractive.
Tho new compressor has boon In
operation for several weeks, and has
proven to bo a very satisfactory ma
chine. Tbe expert who placed this
order Is greatly pleased with the
record made by Supt. Epply in run
ning this compressor, and is using
the figures made here for economy
with other towns.
The new city fathers together with
the retiring board will be invited to
inspect the plant tomorrow night,
and they will find one that will com
pare favorably with any in th.'s
country* both In efficiency of service,
md economy of conducting.
Mr. W. A. Bustle of Ochlochneo
was among the visitors to tho city
Thursday.
