low. Reports from places in the vi
cinity of Boston indicated tempera

mometer at sunrise today ranged from
10 to 15 below zero in the city. In 12
hours the temperature fell about 4«i
degrees. At Lewiston and Auburn
the weather record was 20 degrees be
low zero. Most of the schools in
these places wore closed for lack of
fuel.

Spartanburg, S. C.. Dec. 9.—A meet
ing of the stockholders oi the Gaines
ville, Ga., cotton mills will be held
iu this city Jan. 10 to consider a res
olution of the directors looking to an
increase of $35«>,ii00 In the present
capital stock of the company, the
Gainesville mills now being capitalized
at $500,000.
The new capital stock Is to be pre
ferred and shall be entitled to an an
nual dividend of G per cent payable
semi annually after Jan. 1, 1903, the
preferred stock also to be cumulative,
Tlie president of the Gainesville cot
ton mill is V. M. Montgomery, of this
city, elected to this position last week
by the stockholders to succeed his
father. Captain J. II. Montgomery, de
ceased.

plode with Disastrous Results.
Wilkt-sbarre, I*a.. Dec. 9.—Four
men were killed and seven injured,
thr* e probably fatally, by the explo
sion of a box of dynamite in No. 5
mine of the Lehigh and WUkesbarre
Coal company at South \filkesbarrt
today. The names of the killed are:
Hubert Humblebee, carpenter, mar
ried.
Arthur Jones, company hand, single.
Waiter Philips, miner, married.
James McGlynn, laborer, married.
The fattaly injured are:
Georg*- Knorr, Charles Stafford and
Thomas Evans.
Tin* most seriously injured are:
Neil Sweeney, John Rustin, Domi
nick Hart and James Peckmans.
The men bad lowered into the shaft,
which is 110 feet deep, a box of dyna
mite weighing 50 pounds. When the
bottom of the shaft was reached Phil
ips took the box off the carriage. It
slipped from his hands and fell to the
ground. The concussion exploded the
dynamite and the 20 men who were
in the immediate vicinity were hurled
in all directions. The woodwork at
the bottom of the shaft was torn and
scattered about.

Fight With Negro Gamblers.
Wave mss. Ga., Dec. 9—Sheriff Me
L’lellan and pot>se Saturday arrested 12
negro gamblers at Glen more, near
hero. The negroes were surprised by
the officers while playing “skin” In a
vacant house. The gamblers quickly
dashed out the lifijht and failing to ea-

menced firing at the officers, who re
turned the file. All the negroes were
captured except one, who escaped af
ter being sdmt twice. None of the
others were injured. The gamblere
were lodged in V*ivc ross Jail.

information that the Kansas City,
Mexico and Orient railway will enter
St. Joseph over the double Hacks ot
the Union Terminal company, w-as
obtained yesterday. Announcement
was made last week that the Chicago
and Alton. Wabash and ’Frisco would
enter the city over the Union Ter
initial tracks. The Kansas City, Pitts
burg and Gulf railroad to Port Ar
thur is another line which is to use
the new double tracks to St. Joseph.
