The winter graduating exercise* of the
State Normal Sohool were held la the
auditorium of that institution yesterday
morning at 10 o'olook. The graduating
class was composed of seven young la
die* and one youDg gentleman. Aboot
400 students and a large number of vis
itors were present at the exercises.
Dr. W. P, Lovej >y, presiding elder of
the Athens district, led the d-votioual
exercises. He read a chapter from th-
book of Hebrewa after which a fervent
prayer waa offered Dr. L-.v. j >y p. id a
beautiful tribute to the splendid work of
the faculty of the State Normal School,
in the course of bis remark! and spoke
of the spirit of Christianity that ever
rtigned at this institution. He briefly
portrayed the earnestness with which
teaohers and students alike labored and
■poke of the maguifloent results that
have already been obtained. Ha also
impressed the necessity of religion and
education working side by side and at
tributed the splendid results at tha State
Normal School to the foot that this ne
cessity had always been reoognlssd by
students and teaohers.
The literary address was delivered by
Dr. Ussas S. Hopkins, pastor ot ths
First Methodist ohoroh of this city. Dr
Hopkint is one ot the ablest men in the
South and bis address waa on* et the
best ever delivered in this olty. Hie sub
ject woe: "The Penonal Equation ef
Things Not Physical; or the Power and
Pruvinoe of Personality." Dr. HopUn*
•aid that in the higher realm ot morals
and aesthetics the borrowed term, equa
tion, bad as evident a place as in the
pure or applied mathematlo, and that It
would serve as useful an end as in thair
more abatraot sister soienoe. Dr. Hop
kins gave a brief history nf the audi
tions that resulted in what is now so
well known as personal equation and
proceeded to apply bis eubjeot te tha
members of the graduating olaaa and tha
other students at the State Normal
School. Chancellor Hill and tha ether
member* of the State Normal Beheol
commission, who were on the stage dur
ing the delivery of tots splendid address,
congratulated Dr. Hopkini in th* high
est terms at the oonoluiion ef bia talk,
Mr. Robert Guinn, of Atlanta, saying to
Dr. Hopkins that the highest eompli-
un-nt he coaid pay the addrets was to
■ay that it was so like the ipeaker.
Thera have been a number of requests
for the publication of this addrees, and
in Sunday’s lsane The Banner will print
liberal extraota therefrom.
President E. 0. Branson delivered the
diplomas to the members of the graduat
ing class in a most appropriate manner.
He urged the necessity of Christian
teaohers and asked the graduates to
elways nse their Bibles In the school
room. He impressed the fact that the
profession of teaching waa en* of the
highest and most Important of all pro-
teutons and urged the members of the
graduating olsu to live folly np to the
hlgheat ideals of the profettlonr Dur*
tog the course of bi* remarks Mr. Bran
son recited a short poem from Robert
Burns and briefly explained its fall
meaning in a most beautiful manner.
He then delivered diplomas to the fol
lowing graduates:
Miss Jennie Ellen Olaxtou, Burke
county ; Hits Ada Jane Haddook. Olarke
°onniy: Miss Patlie Hillsman. Olarke
county; Miss Nellie Ketchum, Olarke

win county; Mi.t Lollle M. Smith,
Greeu county; Mua Guarloite Swope,
Muscogee county and Mr. M. W. Spear
man, Jasper oouuty.
Mi.s Lollie Smith, of the graduating
olau, represented the State Normal
School at tha University of Georgia
commencement lut summer, being the
only woman who has ever dtlirt red a
commencement address from tha rost
rum of the Uuiversity chapel.
After a beautiful tong by the State
Normal Sohool Glea O.ub, Dr. W. P
Lovejoy pronounced ths benediction and
tbs curtain was dropped on the most
ineoesaful term the State Normal School
ever experienced.
