THE RESIDENCE OF MR. JOHN R. WHITE.
Ooe'of.the handsomest homes in Clarke county Is that of Judge John R
White, of Whitehall.
It Is an id' al home, situated bcau'lfnlly, and commands a splendid view
of the surrounding country.
Judge White spared neither time nor money in fitting up his home and
it Is one of the most comfortable residences in Georgia, to say nothing of its
architectural beauty.
MR. E. R. HODGSON’S COLONIAL HOME.
One of the recently ereettd modern residence* in tbi* city is that of Ur.
Kdward It. Hodgson, Sr.
It is situated on Prince arenue and is a commanding structure of the
colonial architecture. It 1s recognized as one of the most beautiful residence*
in Athens.
A spacious lawn is in front of residence, adding materially to the beauty
of the home.
THE RESIDENCE OF MRS. W. P. WELCH.
Milledge avenue has many attractive residences, but none that excel that
of Mrs. W. P. Welch.
This lovely residence is thoronghly mrd rn, its architectural beauty is
complete and tbe grounds and surroundings are beautiful.
This residence was built several years siuoe by Oapt. W P. Weloh, who,
up to the time of bis death was one of tbe most prominent citizens of Athens

Athens rontains many houses of historic Interest, but'none more so than
t! e old home of Dr. Crawford W. Long, the die ov rer of Anaesthesia, whose
marbl' statue is to be ereoted in efatuary hall In Washington, as one of the
two statues that is to represent Georgia there.
ThiB residence is located on Prince avenue, on the corner of Chose street,
and is now owned by Messrs T. J. and F. C. Shackelford.
Dr. Dong lived in this house a numner of years prior to his death.
MR. BILLUPS PIIINIZV’S HANDSOME RESIDENCE.

Mr. I blutzy is a sou of the late Ferdinand Phlni/.y and has lived the

He is a prominent cotton factor and is interested in a nnnilier of enter
prise* In Athens.
THE RESIDENCE OF CAPT. JAMES WHITE.
Among the many handsome ante-bellum homes in Athens, a command
ing building of the old Southern architecture, with its tall Corinthian colnmns
and spacions verandas, is tho home of Capt. James White on Prince avenoe.
This is one of the handsomest residences in the city. It was built by Mr.
John T. Grant and later on was the home of Senator Benjamin H. Hill.
Capt. White, the present owner, is cashier of the National Bank of Ath
ens and is one or th • leading cotton mill operators In Georgia.
MR. L. F. EDWARDS’ PALATIAL HOME.
Kasily ranking among the most lovely of the modern residences of the
Classic City is that of Mr. L. F. Kdwarda.
It is one of the very handsome homes on Milledge avenoe, of beautiful
architectural design.
Mr. Kdwarda ia one of tbe leading businesa men of the city.
CHIEF JUSTICE LUMPKIN’S OLD HOME.
Joseph Henry Lumpkin, the first Chlef-Justioe of the Supreme Court of
Georgia, was a citizen of Athens, and built the handsome residence on Priuoe
avenue that is now oocnpied by the Chi Phi fraternity as a Chapter house.
For a number of years this residence was used br the Home School, the
splendid institution for the education of young women, conduoted by Madame
Sophie Sosnowskl and Miss Callie Sosnowaki.
It is one of the moat imposing of the antl-bellum bouses In Athens.
THE OLD HOWELL COBB PLACE.
V’hi e General Howell Cobb was governor of Georgia he erected the
handsome old anti helium reaideooe that now stands on Hill street In this
city, s picture of which appears above.
This bnilding formerly oocupled the oenter of an entire block, but upon
the death of Mrs. General Cobb the property was divided among her heir*
and the residence was moved to the oorner of tbe lot,
It ia now oocupled as a chapter house by the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
