ment of a series of debates between
Georgia and North Carol in a.
A committee from the University of
North Carolina has proposed the follow
ing rules for the debates, which will be
of interest to many people here who will
hear the debates if they are polled ctT.
1. That tharo shall be a series of an
nual debates between the said societies
(literary societies of North Carolina and
Georgia )
2. These debates shall take place on
the first Friday night of April of each
year, beginning with 1904.
3 These debit** shall be held alter
nately m Chapel Hill, N. C., and Ath
ens, Ga., the first being held at Chapel
Hill.
1 Each university shall be repre
sented by two debaters, the same to be
selected by the literary societies of their
respective institutions.
The sureties at the institution
where the debate is held shall bear all
expanses, except, traveling expenses of
the visiting debaters.
<». The president or chancellor of the
institution at which the debate is to be
held shall, with the concurrence of the
president or chancellor of the other
ustitotiou, choose three jadges who
shall decide the debate. Hat no one
shall be a iadge wno is a student or
alumnus of either institutiou, or who
is connected officially therewith.
7. Aqaeryfor debate shall be sub
mitted by the societies at whose insti
tution the debate is to be held by the
second Sa’urday iu October, and the so
cieties of the other institutions shall
inform those submitting the query of
their choice of sides within two weeks
from the time the query is submitted.
8. The debaters must be bona fide
undergraduates of the academic depart
ment of their respective institutions.
9. Each debater shall be allowed
twenty-live minutes, to be divided into
two speeches as he may prefer ; provided
that the second speech shall not be
j more thau ten minutes in length ; and
provided, further, that the second
speech shall be used solely for rejoinder
and not for the introduction of new
matter except in rebuttal.
