NORMAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS.
The Banner regrets to state that only about o le half the numb‘r of schol
arships contribute for the Slate Normal School last year have been renewed
up to this time, and unless something is done toward m,.king np the difi;it
within the next few weeks, a number of earnest, longing young men and
yonng women who Were in attendance npon the State Normal School the
past term, will bo barred frrm this tpleudid institution next term.
The General Education Board, which has dene so much for edn ation in
the South the past few years, has agreed to con'mne the lib-ral p-vicy adtp--d
here at the conference for Southern eduua.iou last year, or duplicating every
scholarship donated by individuals for yonug men and yonng women at the
State Normal School It is up to tho people of Georgia, and especially th ■
people of Athens, who realiz > more keenly than any others the remaikable
work beiug done by the State Normal School, to conn forward wiih a kutll
cient number of scholarship, to iusore the return of every student who at
tended the see si on of the school just closed, under the scholarship plan.
There are fully one hundred persons in Athens w o are perfeoily able to
contribute tcholarships, requiring an outlay of only fat) 00, who would have
considered it a privilege to do so if they could have seen the tearful e; es of
many of the yonug wr.mui, ai.d the expressions of sadness on the faces of
many yonug men who went frooi the halls of the State Normal School this
week realizing that it would he utterly impossible for them to return tocom-
plete their education under the present circumstances, with only about one
half the scholar, hips conttil nted last year contributed up to that time, Evt ry
reader of tills article can, iu a measure, und*rstaud what this means to that
little urmy of earnest, honest men and women seeking to equip themselves
properly for the traiotug of the young boys and girls of the rural districts of
the great htate of Georgia. The scene was one of the most pathttic ev.r wit
nessed tu lias cily.
Unless the State Normal School is to be allowed to take a backward step,
in a measure, about fifty scholarships must be contributed by individuals
within the next few weeks, which will mean a contribution of one liuudnd
scholarships, since the General E location Board duplicates each one con
tributed. The Banner feels that in addition to what has already been done,
the people of Athens could contribute twenty-five of the remaining scholar
ships necessary to reach the Lumber contributed last year, and to enable all
those who were here uuder the scholar, liip plan last tetrn to return at the
opening of the new term.
Keeling this wav, The Banner wi'l contribute one scholarship, and we
hope the people of Athens will lake bold of this important matt.r and come
forw ard as gracefully as they alw ays do ou such occasions and make glad the
hearts of those who left the State Normal School a few days ago feeling that
it would be impossible for them to return at the opening of the next to m.
We appeal to the people of the city to act pr mptly in this matter in or
der that the necessary nnmber of scholarships may oe raised at once aud that
the gia1 tidings may be waftid to the many yearning hearts throughout
tieorgia.

A Tronic Wedding Ring.
A tragic story of a forgotten wed
ding ring Is told in the “Lives of tin
Lindsays.” He should have been at
elmreh when Colin Lindsay, the youn,
Lari of Balearras. was quietly eat
Ing Ids breakfast in nightgown and
slippers. Reminded that Muurithi of
Nassau was waiting for him at the al
tar, he hurried to chureh. but forgot
the ring. A friend present gave him
one, which he, without looking
placed on the bride’s linger.
After the ceremony was over the
countess glanced at her hand and be
lieid a grinning death's head on her
ring. She fainted away, and the omen
made such an impression on her that
on recovering she declared she w
destined to die within a year, a present
iment that probably brought about its
own fulfillment, for in a few mouth;
the cureless Colin was a widower.

Irritation and I*nln.
A sharp delinitiou should he drawn
between irritation and pain. Irritation
is not pain, but only a frequent cause
of it. Thus a crumb lodged In the
larynx near the vocal cords produce
violent Irritation and prolonged cough
Ing, which often result in actual pain
So, too, a speck of dust in the eye sets
up violent irritation and inflammation,
followed by acute pain. Of the sur
face of the body the finger tips and the
end of the tongue are moot sensitive—
for instance, a burn ou the fingers Is
much more painful than one on the
back would be, while one on the tongue
would be more painful still. Deep
wounds are not painful, as a rule, save
as regards the surface injury.
