FADS AND FASHIONS
OF INTEREST TO LADIES
By F lorence Fairbanks.
Nt-w York. December 7.— A very
novel dress trimming Is made of round
discs of velvet buttonholed on the nm-
terial, and connected by three rows
of narrow velvet ribbon.
Intense bluish purple and a peculiar
shade of wood brown is a good com
bination of colors.
Lace blousrs are tlie present fash
ion, some of coarse mesh, others of
fine, and the trimmings are of Valen
ciennes or ruffles of ( limy lace.
Marabout sets consisting of muff
and neck pieces are much worn. They
come in black, white and many shades
of brown. Wide feather tioas with
shaded tips are lovely.
Coral is very fashionable. A new
necklace was seen of alternate gold
and coral beads, and there are many
of plain coral. Gold pendants shown
in dainty designs are set with coral.
White slippers for evening wear
are very handsomely embroidered in
white silk and beads.
A novelty veil of pale blue chiffon
was bordered with pale variegated
flowers above the hem of solid black.
A pretty ruff for the neck was of
dark blue rnaline plaited, and in the
center of the pleats were tiny white
spots.
New hair"Ornaments are made of
dull gold in the shape of lilies and
roses. Also dotted tulle bound with
velvet and wired into different shapes,
or bows cf gaze bound with whit: 1
satin.
Very pretty dancing frocks are made
of white silk dotted net over pale
tinted silk trimmed with wide lace
formed Into a fichu.
Guluipes of silver and gold cloth
are lovely. A little necker can be
worn over any fancy jumper or blouse
and gives a dressy air to a gown. A
large silver ornament should be worn
at the throat with a guimpe of silver
cloth.
Cong separate coats of black broad
cloth are artistically trimmed with
fine braiding. Some have the collar
and cuffs of fur while others are of
black velvet
A lucky brooch is a four-leaved clov
er of green enamel, with a horeshoe
of gold set in the center, and inside
the horseshoe is the popular swastika
design sot in tiny pearls.
Tile deep facings oil the bottom of
skirts have been in fetching colors
with the skirt, hut now a white skirt
may have a hem of Nattier blue.
The correct footgear for winter stret.
wear is the high button tan boot. Gray
or green boots to match the salt are
v. r.v smart for afternoon street wear,
or boots with colored tops that tnatcn
either the gown or hat.
An afternoon gown of smoke gray
marquisetls was trimmed with heavy
1 tee dyed to match ,and the yoke
and sleeves of white silk and chiffon
wer t . entbrt idered with gold and sil
ver thread.
Hats with velvet brims and soft silk
crowns are trimmed with coq feath
ers. Another fancy, in millinery is
pinked taffeta meltings placed so
closely together that they have the
effect of feathers.
The diamond horseshoe brooch is
very popular to fasten the jabot or
to pin the collar in place. Seme of
these are two or more inches high.
Some of the evening slippers are be
ing hand embroidered in silk angles
and small jewels. They are covered
with lace and are hand-painted in
beautiful colors. The embroidery
seen in the gown are often brought
out to the same effect in the slippers.
Very wide fur neck pieces are worn
flits winter anil many cape effects.
Muffs are square and immense. Every
thing is trimmed with heads .tails
and paws, and on flic elaborate sets,
heavy lace is used.
Tailored shirt" waists ctf madras in
white or colors are to be worn this
winter with tailored street suits. The
cufTs on these waists are usually plain,
made to fasten together with link but
tons.
Stripes and checks are still much
in evidence 1 , but the self-colored ma
terials are in the front because they
may be decorated with embroidery
and braiding, and this is a very im-
.portant feature of the season.
Gloves for evening wear are hand-
embroidered and inset with dyed laces.
The embroidery is done in fine beads
of some pale shade. Turquoise and
pink are especially lovely on white
gloves.
The empire effect is brought out in
many evening gowns by the slightly
raised line in the back. Empire
uit lles are very much in vogue.
New French veils in plain or dotted
net. show wide borders of silk em
broidery. A veil of dotted net bail
hand of Chantilly lace and a flounce
at the edge.
Topaz-eolored French broadcloth
makes a charming cloak, atul the lin
ing should lie tt yellow flowered chine
silk. Passementerie ornaments in
self-color and golden-brown velvet are
correct for trimmings.
Sets of jewelry cure shown wnn
the stones matching and consist of a
necklace, earrings, bracelet, ring,
baretto for the hair, and a belt buckle
set with one immense stone. Topaz
and Chinese jade are the most popular
stones usf il in these sets.
EIGHT FLIGHTS UP.
When the first fire company, in re
sponse to an alarm, reached the long
row of tenements, the fire captain at
once jumped front liis engine and en
deavored to locate the fire. When he
had ineffectually hunted through three
or four structures for it, he descried
an old woman sticking her head out of
a window cf t.he topmost floor of an
eight-story tenement, a little farther
up the street.
"Any fire up there?" he yelled, when
he had reached the pavement beneath
this building.
In answer, the old woman motioned
for him to come up.
Accordingly, the captain, with his
men lugging their heavy hose behin 1
them, laboriously ascended the eight
flights and burst into the room where
tlie old woman was.
"Where's the fire?” demanded the
captain, when no fire nor smoke be
came visible.
"Oh, there ain't none here," replied
the old woman. Hashing an ear trum
pet. "i asked >" up ’cause I couldn’t
hear a word you said ’way down there.
