FOR WEDDING PRESENTS.
!■ is s' ted upon good authority tha*
tin- giving of silver pr. sents at a wed
ding is fast becoming an old-fashioned
which only reigns in provincial
places. In place of silver there are
gifts of art. wood and fancy work
While silver is tabooed, it Is still a
custom to make presents of fine glass
ware. It is now quite a fad to give
leather presents in hand satchels and
long; I'd like to I suit cases, something which is always

A WISE MOTHER.
Surely nothing wiser or more beau
tiful was ever written respecting the
training of children thl.tn those lines
of Mark Twain's:
“The mother of my children adores
them—there is no milder term for
it; and they worship her; they even I
worship anything which the touch of!
her hand has made sacred. They
know her for the best and trues:
friend they have ever had or ever shall
have; they know her for one who nev-
sr did them a wrong or cannot d t
th'-ni a wrong; who never told them
a lie, nor the shadow of one; who nev.
er even deceived them by an ambigu
ous gesture; who never gave them
an unreasonable command; nor ever
contented herself with anything short
of a perfect obedience; who has al
ways treated them as she would the
best and oldest In the land, and has
always required of them gentle spece’-.
and gentle conduct toward -all. of
whatsoever degree, they chanced to
eomo in contact with: they know her
for one whose promise, whether for
reward or punishment, is gold, and
always worth its face to the mt< r
most farthing."—McCall's.
