.Manhattan and Brooklyn marked an
important epoch in Gotham's history.
Only a few politicians and the en
gineers who had Charge of the con
struction made the first trip, and they
left Mannatrau practically unnoticed.
Tile Manhattanites were too busy to
celebrate: but the city fathers found
the Brooklyn (teople, when they reach-
the other side of the river, in a
most enthusiastic mood. Bells were
rung, whistles blown and cheers giv-
a multitude gathered at the
tunnel's exit. Too public will not be

this month or early in January.

The setting of the date. January 6,
for the beginning of the second trial
of Harry Kendal Thaw for the murder
f Stanford White lias renewed much
of the discussion and speculation
Which reached such a point of fever-
sh excitement last winter. Thaw's
lirlish looking wife appeared in court,
when the date for the new trial was
*et. and looked if anything youngim
than last year, when she told the
harrowing story of a gay life that
thrilled the millions of newspaper
readers throughout the country. She
was dressed in a. modified pattern of
the school girl costume that became
so famous during the trial last year.
The prospect of the second trial with
in a month has caused renewed ac
tivity on the part of the numerous
societies who are interested in the
moral welfare of young people, to
have the newspapers omit in their ac
counts of tlie trial of the Immoral
and vulgar details that filled the
columns last year.

An attempt lias been made to stop
the mad rush for seats during the
i ush hours in the subway, when both
men and women push and crowd each
other excitedly in order to get a seat.
Special policemen have been placed
at the different express stations with
instructions to preserve order and to
eliminate the football tactics that
have been employed. One of the po
licemen who worked in a sardine fac
tory in Maine before taking his new
position, said he felt decidedly at
home on the crowded platforms dur-
th-e rush hours. Only there was
one difference, he said, in which the
sardines had a little advantage over
the subway passengers—they were
not lxacued while still alive. How
ever, other steps are being taken to
p. lieve the congestion, and the re
port of Bion .1. Arnold, the Chicago
traction expert, who was engaged by
the Public Service Commission, re-
omtncnded that there should be no
nacre standing room In the cars. This
may lie secured by doing away with
the cross seats, and this in turn would
permit the introduction of sliding
loots in the middle of the cars, which
would greatly facilitate the loading
and unloading. He believes that a
train should stop, unload and take
passengers and get under way
again in forty-five seconds.

The electric shoe ldack is the lat

now promises, hundreds of black-eyed
Italian boys will have to seek other
employment. An entire store at
Broadway and Thirty-eighth street
has been rented for the new enter

like the penny-in-the-slot scales. One
has only to step up to the machine,
put five cents in the slot, bury the

taining the brushes, and then touch
button- Instantly the brushes hs>-
gin to revolve, and presently two elec

which is the signal that one shoe it
finished, and that you must put the
other foot !u. The blacking is put on
automatically, too, being supplied iu
the same place where the brushes are
located, from little tubes on the sides.
There are different machines for tail
and black shoes. The electric pclis’.i-
er seems to have numerous advant
ages over the human boot black, for
besides doing its work well it can't
get the blacking on one's socks, it
can't keep up a steady stream of
conversation, and it doesn't have to

There was an exciting hunt in the
subway recently for a young bride
who ted been separated from her hus
band by a guard who ordered the
doors closed before the bridegroom
could get on the train. The newly
weds were from Troy and arrived in
New York en route to Washington
where they were to spend their honey
moon. As neither had seen the sub
way they thought they would spend
a half hour in investigating it. They
rode as far up town as Ninety-sixth
street, and then decided to return. It
was here their trouble began, for they
encountered the crowds on their way
to work. The bride managed to
squeeze, on to the train, but “hubby”
was not so alert. Slam went the
door, and the groom (beside himself
with rage saw the cars pull out, car
rying his young bride farther and far
ther away from him. The groom fear
ing that his young wife was hopeless
ly lost began to offer money to those
on the lerowded •platform if dhey
would find her. An interesting chose
was started with the result that the
wife was soon discovered, scared and
trembling at the Fourteenth street
station. The happy couple, once more
united took the next train tor Wash
