Cotton As a 9 ash Crop.—Cot-
Ion is our best cosh crop. Like
all general statements this one
certainly. needs qualification and
to do this let us state the condi
tions under- which we believe that
a farmer of Clarke county can
pioduce cotton with the best
chance of doing it profitably.
Scientific methods of boll wee
vil control must be used. The
habits of the boll weevil should be
learned.by those directing the cot
ton production and those actually
proving the crop need a set plan
of operation, which Flan necessar
ily. must be y developed from known
and-tried control methods. I will
bier on' r give such a rule-of-
thumb < plan for Clarke county
based . on*, /scientific experiments
and actual practice iq this section.
For tbe* time being let us state
that .anyone- entering the field of
cotton production in 1024 without
carefully laying plans for boll
weevil ^control is .courting disas-;

the small owner-operator as Ath

markets in the country for eggs,
butter, vegetables, etc. This is
more difficult for the large owner
and such owners need to work out
a plan of close supervision and
co-operation, and wherever practi
cable, build a small unit within
.the larger organization, on which
supplementary crops can be pro
duced with wages hands.
4. The production of sufficient
home supplies to take care of the
farm and also (o lessen the haz
ard of farming. For the large
unit this is not difficult if the
owner can organize a wages hand
plan for the production of oats,
hay, corn, hogs, etc., using the
slack time of cotton croppers at
this work and the slack time of
