Most players, therefore, agree that
the bidding w infinitely more important
than the play. Aa one well-known writer
ha* exnreMed it: "The most important
part of the game is concluded before the
wet card leaves the leader's hand.*’4t
is only necessary to examine a few
hands to satisfy oneself of the truth of
this statement. The foliowioc hand
which was played by three different
sets of players for comparative porpoise
is a fine example of the tremendous
difference* in points caund by the
different bids: .
A question that often comes up for
discussion among Auction players is
whether the bidding or play b the more
important. This is a question that will
probably never be settled to the com
plete satisfaction of all but it b fairly
easy to select example hands that sho r
the tremendous differences in points
caused by different bids. One rarely
finds a hand where the loss of a trick or
two In the play causes a loss of more
than game, and the value of A game
b estimated as half a rubber or 125

spade, Z naturally thought he haw*

Needless to say, A-B made five spa#*
doubled, losing only one dub and oat
diamond. Their score was 90 points for
tricks, 81 points for honors, 100 paters
lor bonus, and 125 points for cun, a
total of 396 points.
At table No. 1, A and B made tte
mistake of doubling four hearts giving
Y-Z a plus score of 255 points. At table
No. 2, where both aides bid correctly,
Y-Z obtained a minus score of 84 paints.
At table No. 3. where Y-Z made the
mistake of doubling four spades, A-B
made a plus score of 396 points. This
hand illustrates very well toe difference
in bouts can.sol by different bids. In
comparing the stores of but three sets
of [(layers, a difference in point sate*
cf 651 point* between a pits score'of
255 points for Y-Z ami 396 points for
A-B. This one example is given to call
attention to the big swings caused by
different bide or doubles awl to empha
size the necessity of proper bidding.
Auction is a game of ace* and kings
and the location of these important
cards can only be given to partner by
clever and intelligent bidding, based an

two spades is of no value in abutting
out a bid. Z figured that B’s bid of two
spades was intended to prevent a heart
btd, so promptly bid three hearts. A
bid three spades; Y four hearts; and B
doubled. This double was bad. because
B should have figured that he could
not beat the four heart bid by more
than one trick at most. As a result Y-Z
made four hearts doublet!, * uring 64
points for tricks, 16 points for honors,
50 points for bonus and 125 points for
game, a total of 255 points.
At table No. 2, A bid one spade and
Y correctly bid two hearts rather than
double. With a two e*er always show
one of the suit* interference to a
.double. It is the atrongtst hand that
can be held at Auction, therefore try
to play it at one of the two suits, if
possible. B now bid two spades: Z anti
A pasted. Y bid three dubs, shoving
his other suit and thereby requiring his
partner to chooec which of the two suits
offered the best diance for game. B
now bid three spades and Z having
good cards in both of his partner's
suits properly bkl four hearts. A bid
four spades and Y, a very good player,
figuring that his opponents could nuke
iltrir bid, now bid five bouts which B
doubled. Y-Z lost their contract by one
trick or 100 points less 16 points for
honors, a net loss of 84 points. The
at this table was correct and
gives die correct result of the hand.
At table No. 3, the bidding was the
